Delivery Driver, CDL B (Open) – R

Responsibilities

Operating as the public face of Airgas, the delivery driver plays a crucial role in the safe and efficient delivery of compressed gas cylinders. Using a company‑provided vehicle such as a tractor‑trailer, straight truck, or box truck, employees transport cylinders to local and regional business customers. This involves the complete cycle of loading, unloading, delivery, and return of compressed gas cylinders, along with frequent interaction with Airgas customers.

  • Class B Drivers – Any single vehicle with a GVWR/GVW of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Establish good customer relations.
  • Communicate in person with customers, providing information on ordering, delivery times, etc.
  • Provide timely communication back to the distribution manager or customer’s salesman regarding any changes related to the customer.
  • Maintain load manifests and all other vehicle documents, ensuring they are properly completed and balanced with truck counts and shipping documents before and after deliveries.
  • Perform pre‑trip and post‑trip vehicle inspections and advise of any needed repairs using the vehicle inspection report form. Have any immediate problems repaired before going on route.
  • Assist management in route evaluations and efficiencies.
  • Attend at least one safety meeting per month.
  • Keep the inside of trucks clear of paper and trash.
  • Be responsible for performing on‑call delivery duties during weekday, after hours, and weekends as assigned by the manager.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, or equivalent is preferred.
  • After Driving School minimum age 22 with one year experience driving commercial vehicles with CDL and all required endorsements. Minimum age 23 with 2 years’ experience driving commercial vehicles with CDL and all required endorsements.
  • Required to have a hazardous material endorsement on the CDL, or have the ability to obtain the endorsement within a reasonable timeframe established by the Business unit, not to exceed 90 days or upon approval by the business.
  • May be required to obtain a cargo tank endorsement to drive a Microbulk/tanker.
  • No more than two (2) traffic convictions: OR two (2) at‑fault accidents in the last 3 years; or no more than a combination of one (1) traffic conviction and one (1) at‑fault accident in the last 3 years. No driving while under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance within the last seven (7) years.
  • All new CDL Driver hires must register for the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and allow Airgas consent to review their Clearinghouse record.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA’s)
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety data sheets.
  • Must meet all physical qualification standards imposed by regulation for drivers.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, grasping, feeling and repetitive motion also required.
  • Ability to work independently and under some pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Able to work multiple shifts and work overtime when needed.
  • Must be able to work with a wide variety of people with different personalities and backgrounds.
  • Must be able to operate in a drug‑free workplace.
  • Speak and read English well enough for the safe and effective performance of the job, including but not limited to, conversing with the general public, understanding highway traffic and signals, responding to official questions, utilizing company electronic devices when required and making legible entries on reports and records.
