The OR Circulator RN is a licensed Registered Nurse responsible for managing and coordinating the nursing care of surgical patients in the operating room environment. The Circulator ensures patient safety and quality care by working closely with the surgical team, anesthesia providers and other perioperative staff throughout the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative phases.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive pre-operative assessment of the patient, verify surgical consent, allergies, site verification, and prepare the patient for surgery.

• Circulate in the operating room: ensure all necessary equipment/supplies are available, anticipate the needs of the surgical team, maintain aseptic technique and sterile field integrity.

• Monitor patient status (vital signs, positioning, implants/devices), collaborate with anesthesia and surgical team, and intervene as needed to maintain patient safety.

• Document intraoperative events, supplies, counts (sponges, instruments, sharps), and the patient’s response to anesthesia and surgery.

• Facilitate efficient turnover of OR room: ensure proper cleaning/sterilization, reset the room, liaise with Central Sterile, scheduling, and other support services.

• Provide post-operative handoff to recovery area (PACU) nurses: report on intraoperative events, positioning, devices/prosthetics, hemodynamic status, fluids and drains.

• Participate in quality improvement initiatives, safety protocols (time-out, surgical count verification, infection prevention), and compliance with regulatory/ accreditation standards.

• Assist in the training and orientation of new perioperative staff and students as needed.

• Maintain compliance with departmental policies, hospital standards, and professional nursing practice.

Required Qualifications

• Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Ohio (or compact)

• Graduation from an accredited Associate or Bachelor of Science in Nursing program

• Basic Life Support (BLS) required at hire;
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred or required within defined timeframe

• Operating room or perioperative nursing experience preferred (e.g., 1-2 years)

• Strong knowledge of surgical instrumentation, aseptic technique, perioperative nursing standards

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, organizational and critical-thinking skills

• Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment, adapt to change, and collaborate with multi-disciplinary team

• Ability to maintain situational awareness, respond to emergencies, and advocate for patient safety

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

• CNOR (Certified Perioperative Nurse) certification

• Prior experience with OR turnover/room setup, surgical supply management, and high-volume cases

• Experience with electronic health record systems in the perioperative environment

• Demonstrated involvement in quality improvement, infection control or patient safety initiatives
