Job Description

The Sustainability Engineer/Scientist role provides scientific, technical, and program leadership to transform sustainability concepts into scalable operational capabilities. As the on site functional program expert, this role leads the development and industrialization of Boka and associated biological processes, including inoculum and worm management, while driving comprehensive utilization of Royal Canin Plant and Pet Center organic and kibble waste streams. The position develops and manages internal and external partnerships, leads the Site Boka program supporting the Sustainability Park and Breeder Exhibit, and serves as a technical coach to strengthen associate capabilities.

The role collaborates with RC R&D and regional universities to conduct environmental research such as vermicomposting and gas production. Through domestic and international engagement, the Sustainability Engineer/Scientist facilitates knowledge transfer, methodology development, and expansion of sustainable solutions beyond the local site.

What are we looking for?

An advanced degree (master’s or PhD) is required in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemical or biochemical engineering, fermentation science, microbiology, biotechnology, agronomy, or a closely related discipline.

  • Relevant academic or professional specialization in fermentation, composting, vermicomposting, biological waste treatment, or sustainable bioprocess development is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey scientific and technical information, prepare research reports and presentations, and communicate effectively with internal teams, academic collaborators, and external partners.
What will be your key responsibilities?
  • Functional Expertise: Serve as the functional expert in fermentation and composting, providing scientific and technical leadership to advance the Boka program. Provide technical coaching and guidance to site associates assisting with Boka and Sustainability Park initiatives.
  • Site Boka Worm Program Management: Own the Site Boka program, overseeing vermicomposting operations and the management of worm populations to support organic waste processing.
  • Boka Industrialization and Waste Stream Integration: Lead the industrialization and scale-up of Boka to encompass composting of all organic waste streams produced at RLE and ROH, including brown and green materials and kibble waste. Lead the development, implementation, and scale-up of worm production capabilities to support on site operations and external partnership programs. Establish and manage large scale inoculum production at RLE to meet internal operational needs and external partner requirements.
  • Internal and External Partnership Management: Develop and manage internal and external partnerships, including collaboration with RC R&D, the PRO/Vet network, private companies and regional universities, to align expertise, coordinate research activities, and support advancement of the Boka program requiring both domestic and international.
  • Research Ownership: Partner with the Disruptive Team to plan, conduct, and manage on-site research projects that further advance the Boka program. Potential research interests include microbiology, sustainability, agronomics, technologies, and ergonomics.
