The University of California, Irvine is seeking qualified candidates for a Per Diem Clinical Associate Medical Intensivist position for ICU/SDU coverage
. Duties will include clinical service primarily at the UCI site in Los Alamitos Hospital
.

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.D./D.O. degree.
  • Board-certified or eligible in the field of Critical Care Medicine.
  • Eligible for California licensure.
  • Experienced in providing and/or oversight of care.

Total Compensation

Critical Care shift rates for a Clinical Associate range from $2,820 - $3,300 per 12‑hour shift based on day vs night shift. Per‑Diem Clinical Associates will be paid bi‑weekly based on hours worked during pay period.

Primary responsibilities of this position:

  • Direct Patient Care in the Medical ICU and step‑down unit – 60%
  • Consultation for Inpatient Critical Care Needs – 15%
  • Supervision, Teaching, and Mentorship – 15%
    • Model professionalism and patient‑centered care for APPs.
  • Communication and Family Engagement – 5%
  • Quality Improvement, Safety, and Administrative Duties – 5%
Responsibilities

Your Role on the Team
:

  • Demonstrated experience in quality improvement to improve patient outcomes.
  • Leadership skills: ability to motivate, inspire, communicate with staff and peers to maintain a professional, team‑based approach in the care of patients.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and objectives while in compliance of all UC policies and procedures. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all state and federal privacy laws.
  • Clinical responsibilities will involve:
    • Direct Patient Care
      • Provide comprehensive care to critically ill medical patients in the ICU and step down units, including diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic respiratory failure, shock, sepsis, multi‑organ failure, and other life‑threatening conditions.
      • Perform and supervise critical care procedures (e.g., endotracheal intubation, central venous and arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, advanced ventilator management).
      • Lead daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds, developing and coordinating individualized patient care plans.
    • Consultation and Collaboration
      • Serve as the attending intensivist for patients admitted to the medical ICU and relevant patients in the step‑down unit.
      • Provide critical care consultation for patients on hospital wards, ED, and other units as requested.
      • Collaborate closely with hospitalists, emergency physicians, subspecialists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and ancillary staff to ensure high‑quality patient‑centered care.
    • Clinical Oversight and Supervision
      • Supervise and mentor advanced practice providers (APPs in the ICU and step‑down unit).
      • Ensure evidence‑based practice standards and adherence to institutional protocols for ICU management.
    • Communication
      • Engage in frequent and compassionate communication with patients’ families regarding goals of care, prognosis, and treatment options.
      • Participate in family meetings, advanced care planning, and end‑of‑life discussions when appropriate.
    • Quality, Safety, and System Roles
      • Contribute to ICU quality improvement initiatives, patient safety programs, and guideline development.
      • Participate in ICU administrative duties as assigned, including mortality/morbidity reviews and improvement.
      • Assist in developing and updating ICU policies, procedures, and clinical pathways.
    • Continuity of Care
      • Ensure appropriate documentation, billing, and handoff of ICU patients.
