Overview
The position may be filled at Occupational Physician 3 or 4 level, depending on candidate skills. Additional responsibilities may be assigned if hired at the higher level.
What You Will DoThe Occupational Physician will be a key staff member of the Occupational Health organization to promote worker health and wellbeing at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Provide exceptional service at worker, organizational and institutional levels. You will have opportunities to learn and practice medicine in fields such as radiation emergency medicine; chemical, biological and physical hazard exposure; ergonomics; substance abuse testing; travel health;
reproductive health; population health management; and others.
Clinical duties include: fitness-for-duty evaluations; management of work-related injuries and illnesses; after-hours call support; medical surveillance and certification examinations; and triage of non-occupational health issues. Other duties include: oversight and supervision for Advanced Practice Clinicians; support of emergency response efforts; serving as the subject matter expert for various medical surveillance and certification programs; consulting on institutional projects or policy development related to worker health;
and support for the Medical Director.
Occupational Physician 4 ($180,220-$322,600)
- In addition to the lower level duties, serve as a consultant and subject matter expert for complex workers compensation cases.
- Provide toxicological advice and guidance during exposure events as a subject matter expert.
- Act as the occupational medicine subject matter expert for field health and safety stakeholders.
- Serve as Designated Physician or Physical Protection Medical Director for the Protective Force.

Job Requirements:
Leadership
- Demonstrated leadership experience collaborating with personnel at all levels, including Advanced Practice Clinicians and nurses.
- Demonstrated commitment to continual learning, team-building, prioritizing, managing resources, and meeting objectives and deadlines.
Clinical/Practical Experience
- Demonstrated recent clinical experience in direct patient care and experience with periodic health surveillance examinations.
- Experience in review, analysis and interpretation of diagnostic testing (laboratory work, electrocardiography, pulmonary function testing, audiometry, vision testing, fitness assessments).
- Passion for worker well-being and population health management.
- Competency in using an electronic medical record.
Additional Job Requirements for Occupational Physician 4:
- Leadership in promoting a culture of psychological safety and organizational learning.
- Experience with occupational health-related federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Experience with radiological, chemical, and biological hazards and diseases.
- Ability to conduct research, investigate alternatives, and recommend solutions in occupational medicine.
- Skill in preparing and presenting occupational medicine technical and non-technical reports.
Training/Certifications/License:
- Ability to obtain a license to practice medicine by the New Mexico Board of Medical Examiners.
- Ability to obtain a New Mexico pharmacy and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license.
Education/Experience
- Education at level 3:
Doctorate in Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO);
Board Certification or Board Eligible by ABMS or ABS; familiarity with occupational medicine; 5+ years of recent clinical experience. - Education at level 4: MD or DO; ABPM board certification in Occupational and Environmental Medicine; 5+ years of recent clinical experience in occupational medicine.

Qualifications:
- Current certification for National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (FMCSA).
- Current certification as Medical Review Officer.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health regulations and standards (e.g., OSHA).
- Knowledge of Workers Compensation statutes and workplace implementation.
- Experience with emergency preparedness support.
- Knowledge of hazards related to biologic, chemical, physical and radiologic hazards.
- Contributions to health and wellness program development.
- Understanding of ergonomic science, exercise science, and interpretation of tactical fitness assessments.
- Familiarity with DOE health and safety standards.
- Knowledge of fitness-for-duty and work ability.
- Experience with customer service and performance improvement projects.
- Commitment to growth as a team player.
The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service. The position commitment for this role is 1 year.
