The University of New Mexico-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) invites applications for a full-time, 9-month, Lecturer I or II faculty appointment in Welding Technology.
Full-time faculty at UNM-LA are required to teach, engage in service, and engage in professional development activities in accordance with established workload policies. The teaching load will regularly be comprised of courses in Welding Technology such as Arc Welding I, Gas Metal Arc Welding I, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding I, in addition to other introductory and intermediate-level undergraduate welding courses. Duties will also include responsibility for maintaining and repairing equipment in the newly updated UNM-LA machine shop, ensuring the Welding Technology curricula is up-to-date, maintaining a running inventory of supplies, and ordering and receiving welding supplies in a timely manner to keep classroom operations running.
Additionally, this faculty member will be responsible for all safety procedures in the welding shop and for arranging for the periodic removal of scrap metal and other waste. To meet the unique needs of our branch campus, a portion of the teaching load can be reallocated to Service or Professional Development/Activities/Scholarship or administrative duties, in consultation with the Dean and Program Coordinator.
Faculty may have the opportunity to develop courses in the faculty members’ specific areas of expertise and interest. Full-time faculty members teach assigned day, evening, and weekend classes, in various modalities, in accordance with established guidelines and policies, as well as participate in student advising, faculty governance committees, other academic and institutional support activities, and supervisory responsibilities as assigned.
All faculty members are expected to remain current in teaching best practices and transformational pedagogy, and to adhere to accepted standards for professionals in education. Additional responsibilities may include possible supervision of internships, participating in curriculum development and revision, training and mentoring adjunct faculty, attending forums and meetings, participating in initiatives related to undergraduate research, grant-writing, and serving on additional department and college committees and boards as requested.
Final offer is contingent upon having the ability to be on campus in Los Alamos at least three days per week. Appointment begins August 10, 2026.
SALARY
:
Starting salary is commensurate with degrees and experience. Contingent on funding availability, starting base salary for 1.0 FTE is $65,000 for a 9-month faculty position. QualificationsMinimum requirements:
(1) Current Professional Welding Certification (AWS or ASME)
(2) Three years of trades experience in welding
Preferred Qualifications:
(1) Associate level degree in Welding Technology or a closely related field
(2) ASW Certified Welding Inspector
(3) Demonstrated teaching experience at a branch/community college or similar institution
(4) Experience running an industrial shop, including equipment and inventory maintenance
(5) Five years of trades experience in welding
(6) A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities
