Additive Manufacturing Scientist 3 – Los Alamos National Laboratory
Join the Sigma Division where we focus on manufacturing science with an emphasis on metallurgical processes and research to support Los Alamos’s experimental testing program. The division serves a broad customer base, both internal and external, providing high‑quality prototype and research‑and‑development capabilities across the entire periodic table.
What You Will Do- Lead and execute projects to validate new additive manufacturing (AM) approaches across metal and ceramic processes such as laser powder bed fusion, electron beam additive manufacturing, cold spray, and directed energy deposition.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with scientists, engineers, technicians, and business stakeholders to solve manufacturing challenges, develop prototypes, and provide metallurgical guidance.
- Support computational efforts, both internally and in collaboration with other LANL experts, to investigate compensation, residual stresses, material composition, and microstructure development.
- Lead proposal writing for internal and external R&D funding opportunities.
- Mentor and guide junior team members, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
Job Requirements
- Expert in one or more metal additive manufacturing technologies, including powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, wire arc additive, and electron beam additive manufacturing.
- Proven expertise in metallurgy with deep understanding of solidification science and microstructural evolution for metals such as titanium, aluminum, stainless steel, and nickel‑based alloys.
- Expert‑level understanding of computer‑aided design (CAD) software.
- Hands‑on experience with a wide range of metal AM hardware, energy sources, and processes.
- Exceptional technical writing and presentation skills for both technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including mentoring junior members.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and ability to independently drive research and develop projects.
Position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM field from an accredited institution and 6 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Desired Qualifications- Advanced skills in computational modeling and simulation, including physics‑based models.
- Strong data analysis skills and proficiency in advanced statistical, machine learning, and AI techniques.
- Experience with non‑destructive testing or characterization of metal microstructures.
- Experience with in‑situ diagnostics.
- Experience developing scientific vision and goals for R&D applications and novel processes.
Onsite at Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees must provide continuous service in their current position to be eligible for posted jobs. Commitment for this position is 1 year.
