What You Will Do
The NMCA Group is seeking an enthusiastic individual to provide nuclear material safeguards oversight in support of the Weapons Program. Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Nuclear Material Control & Accountability (NMCA) personnel in the Security Programs Division are responsible for overseeing the Decontamination & Decommission (D&D) activities which involve the handling and disposition of Special Nuclear Material (SNM) and other accountable Nuclear Material (NM).
The successful candidate will need to have a strong attention to detail, questioning attitude, and excellent interpersonal skills necessary to provide nuclear accountability oversight in an operational blended work environment.
This position will be filled at either the D&D Material Control & Accountability Specialist 2/D&D Material Control & Accountability Specialist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
D&D Material Control & Accountability Specialist 2As a D&D Material Controls & Accountability Specialist 2 (D&D Coordinator), under direct supervision you will ensure compliance with Material Control and Accountability requirements. You will perform oversight for NMCA of legacy material, material holdup, and waste items in the field and LANL NMCA accounting system. Additionally, the D&D Coordinator will monitor and document nuclear material values in databases. The D&D Coordinator will need to be able to work with supervision.
D&DMaterial Control & Accountability Specialist 3
In addition to what is outlined at Specialist 2 level, the level 3 position you will determine significance of any analytical variances. You will represent NMCA to operational stakeholders. You will track all accountable items and ensure physical protective measures are continuously in place in accordance with a security plan until off-site shipment is performed. Additionally, the D&D Coordinator will analyze nuclear material values in databases and determine significance of any analytical variances.
This position requires the ability to work independently due to the requirement of some non-traditional shift work supporting the D&D program.
Job Requirements
- Specialized knowledge and experience in at least one of the following: nuclear facility operations, application of MC&A requirements of nuclear D&D, chemical/physical processes dealing with nuclear material.
- Knowledge of non-destructive assay methods.
- Proven technical/problem solving and analytical skills, and the ability to understand procedures and regulatory drivers.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel for report generation, presentation and trending.
- Strong communication skills with ability to communicate technical concepts to personnel of all levels.
Job Requirements for Material Control & Accountability Specialist 3
- Advanced specialized knowledge in least one of the following: nuclear facility operations, application of MC&A requirements of nuclear D&D, chemical/physical processes dealing with nuclear material.
- Experience working in a Nuclear high hazard facility.
Position requires a bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience directly related to the occupation. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.
Education/Experience at higher levelPosition requires a bachelor's degree and 8 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.
Desired Qualifications- Experience with one of the following:
Nuclear Facility, D&D, MC&A with LANMAS - Stem Degree in a technical
- Experience with implementing successful process improvement projects designed to improve both efficiency and quality.
- Knowledge and understanding of NMCA requirements as outlined in DOE O 474.2
- Experience with LANMAS Databases
This position will require non-traditional shift work, to include night and weekends. The non-traditional shift work schedule may offer shift differential pay.
Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
