What You Will Do
The successful applicant will work as an Engineering Technologist resource for the V‑14, Test Engineering group. He/she will work with test engineers, systems engineers, and management to ensure successful preparation and execution of experimental activities.
The successful candidate will support component, subsystem, and system testing, including explosive experiment execution. The Engineering Technologist is responsible for supporting the preparation and execution of experimental activities, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment, setting up instrumentation and data acquisition equipment, and other similar tasks. Specific test environments include but are not limited to shock, vibration, thermal conditioning, blast, and centrifuge testing.
Compliance with LANL and facility safety and security practices and delivering accurate test results in a team effort are central to all testing efforts. Additional job responsibilities include participating in the development of new testing technologies and techniques and implementing quality assurance requirements.
Performance of job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include high explosives, radioactive materials, radiation generating devices, and other hazardous materials.

- Maintaining required safety and security training, assuring safety and security compliance, and making safety and security an integral part of every task.
- Use and apply standard principles, theories, concepts and techniques within mechanical discipline to perform work.
- Provide resolutions to an assortment of problems of moderately complex scope.
- Assist in engineering studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems, and equipment.
- Apply basic knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems. Make simple calculations and perform basic analyses in support of engineering.
- Assist in product/system/equipment design, development and/or experimental evaluation processes.
- Prepare, review, and document technical information.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrate knowledge in planning and executing tests involving components, preferably in shock, vibration, and/or thermal environments.
- Experienced with the use of data acquisition systems and associated diagnostics.
- Demonstrate ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently as well as in a team environment.
- Demonstrate experience in the testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.
- Experienced working and delivering products on schedule, while being involved in multiple projects having various and sometimes changing priorities.
- Demonstrate written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrate record of developing constructive, cooperative working relationships and working with teams to meet deliverables.
- Proficient in the safe and proper use of hand tools (e.g., torque wrenches, combination wrenches, ratchets, sockets, pliers) for assembly, maintenance, and repair tasks.
- Experienced in safely operating a variety of power tools, including drills and impact wrenches, to perform maintenance and assembly tasks.
- Comfortable working safely around hazards (e.g., explosives, radiation).
- Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- Experienced in conducting environmental tests, such as thermal, shock, vibration, and mechanical testing.
- Experienced operating electrodynamic shakers, centrifuges and thermal chambers.
- Experience working in the vicinity of and handling classified information.
- Knowledge of data acquisition and signal conditioning systems to obtain data from various types of instrumentation including accelerometers, strain gages, and thermocouples.
- Experience with operations involving innate hazards such as high explosives and radiological material.
- Experience developing and implementing maintenance programs for experimental equipment.
- Active DOE Q clearance
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
