What You Will Do
The Engineering Services (ES) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is responsible for developing, maintaining, and applying a wide range of engineering capabilities to support the Laboratory's scientific and national security missions. This role is part of the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO). Within ES, the Project Delivery Groups provide engineering facility support ensuring the modification and installation of systems, structures, and components meet operational standards.
This position primarily supports commercial non-nuclear facilities across the Laboratory's 26-mile site but may also involve work with nuclear and accelerator facilities.
As the LANL Chief Field Engineer (Engineering Manager
3), you will lead and oversee key activities related to Field Engineering, ensuring successful implementation and integration of engineering practices across various projects. You will also lead the training and qualifications program for Engineering Services' Field Engineering Team across all disciplines and functions. This role emphasizes strong leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to safety while contributing to the Laboratory's mission through innovative engineering solutions.

- Proven experience managing technical teams and collaborating with diverse engineering disciplines
- The ability to work closely with peers and counterparts involved in construction and maintenance engineering activities
- Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and train team members effectively
- Experience with personnel management, including hiring, onboarding, and performance management
- Skills in collaborative problem-solving between various stakeholders
- Proven track record in fostering an inclusive, respectful work environment free from discrimination and harassment
- Strong organizational skills for managing daily, weekly, and long-term team communications and meetings
- Solid understanding of Quality Management and the role Field Engineering plays in ensuring quality standards
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting engineering drawings and specifications
- Experience in project planning, design, execution and/or closeout activities, and providing effective project management
- Strong communication skills for presenting technical solutions to various audiences, including management, customers, peers, and team members
- Comprehensive understanding of safety programs, policies and practices with proven adherence to safety standards
- Physical ability to navigate a construction worksite
Education/
Experience:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A professional license (PE) in an engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board preferred.
- Experience in supporting nuclear engineering services to ensure facilities are designed, constructed, modified, and maintained to satisfy customer needs and expectations in a cost effective, safe, and compliant manner
- Experience participating in or managing a training and/or qualification program and have mentored or trained others
- Project and/or engineering technical management and leadership training and coursework
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA-1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience using and interpreting industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the construction discipline
- Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering
- Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
