What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Process and Sampling Technician 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
You will work as part of the Radiation Instrumentation and Calibration Team in the Radiation Protection Services Group at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This team supports the Radiation Protection Program by maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting and developing radiation protection instrumentation. Duties will include supporting the test, evaluation, maintenance, and calibration processes for fixed and portable alpha, beta, neutron, photon, and tritium radiation protection instruments.
As a member of the team, you will maintain accurate computerized and written calibration records and other pertinent documentation. You will interact with team staff members, health physicists and radiological control technicians. This position requires weekend and/or swing shift work.
At this level, a Process and Sampling Tec-2 will be responsible for repair and calibration of radiation protection instrumentation using electronic test equipment and radioactive sources.
- Sets up, calibrates, operates, maintains, and repairs a wide variety of precise and complex radiation detection instrumentation.
- Assists in troubleshooting issues or concerns in instrument functions or performance
- Assists in precision measurements, tests, and inspections on instruments to determine their conformance to regulatory and procedural specifications.
- Assists with validations, measurements and/or experimental results, and validations, measurements and/or experimental results.
- Assists with the preparation of procedures.
- Implements assigned corrective actions.
- Identifies trends in instrument performance that may require recalibration or servicing of the instrument/equipment.
- Provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity.
- Assigned broad work assignments based on verbal instruction from supervisor or project leader, self-initiates work on daily basis.
- Use and interpret moderately complex assembly drawings to determine orientation and arrangement of parts, components, cabling and/or circuitry.
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating processes, procedures, and applications.
- Conducts and/or manages precision measurements, tests, and inspections on instruments to determine their conformance to regulatory and procedural specifications.
- Validates and authenticates measurements.
- Assists with the development of calibration and/or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments.
- Identifies trends in instrument performance that require recalibration or servicing of the instrument/equipment.
- Performs non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment.
- Provides solutions to a variety of technical problems of sophisticated scope and complexity.
- Provides on-the-job training to junior technicians.
Job Requirements
- Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, mathematics, and/or electronics principles.
- Experience in the maintenance and repair of instrumentation.
- Experience operating a variety of testing and/or inspection equipment.
- Experience with analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and repair at the board and component level.
- Skill in the preparation and presentation of test-measurement results.
- Ability to respond quickly and effectively to emerging issues.
- Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to follow technical procedures.
- General knowledge of common and unique work hazards and occupational safety practices
- Basic computer skills. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).
- An excellent record of dependability, availability, attendance, and punctuality is essential.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, security, quality and excellent customer service.
- Applicant must have the ability to obtain a Q, which normally requires U.S. citizenship.
Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Tec-3 Level
- Understanding and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts related to instrumentation and testing equipment.
- Knowledge and experience with electrical repair.
- Familiarity in monitoring the performance of qualified instruments for trends that may require the recalibration or servicing of the instrument.
- Ability to work independently and as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
