What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Material Control & Accountability Specialist 2 or Material Control & Accountability Specialist 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Do you want to support the Los Alamos National Laboratory Pit Production mission? The Nuclear Material Control and Accountability (NMCA) Group is seeking a dedicated employee to provide nuclear material safeguards support of Weapons Program operations at the LANL Plutonium Facility. Support the LANL Protective Force during live exercises and response to real-world events. The successful candidate will have a strong attention to detail, and exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to provide nuclear material security oversight in a production environment.
MaterialControl & Accountability Specialist 2 ($85,900 - $139,900)
- Performs several nuclear material security functions including, but not limited to:
- Support Plutonium facility operations events, such as Material Access Area (MAA) vault door openings.
- Respond to and assess Radiation Portal Monitor (RPM) alarms.
- Perform RPM troubleshooting, maintenance, and testing.
- Integration with the LANL Protective Force during live exercises and response to real‑world events.
- Perform sweeps of Material Balance Areas (MBA) at the LANL Plutonium Facility and across LANL in support of nuclear material physical inventory.
- Perform nuclear material confirmation measurements on items leaving the Plutonium Facility MAA.
- Make recommendations regarding nuclear material security and safeguards methods to assure and improve the protection of special nuclear materials during routine facility operations.
- Communicate elements of nuclear material safeguards to both technical and non‑technical personnel.
- Review/revise work instructions regarding Z‑badge roles and responsibilities and RPM maintenance and testing.
- Coordinate routine RPM maintenance and testing.
- Investigate radioactive materials and shielding concerns with regards to nuclear material security.
- Interface with physical security (LANL Protective Force) and Vulnerability Assessments (VA) organizations with regards to nuclear material security concerns.
Job Requirements
- Working knowledge and experience in one or more of the major nuclear material security areas.
- Basic understanding of radiation and radiation interactions in matter.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare and present nuclear material safeguards incidents or anomalous condition reports.
Job Requirements for Material Control & Accountability Specialist 3
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
- Working knowledge and experience in one or more of the nuclear material detection and characterization fields, such as Radiation Protection or Non‑Destructive Assay (NDA) of nuclear materials.
- Experience using radiation detection instrumentation, including portable gamma spectrometers (NaI, La and HPGe) with neutron detection capabilities.
Position requires an Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 5 years of related experience; or, equivalent combination of education and relevant experience directly related to the occupation.
Additional consideration may be given to professionally recognized training and certifications in related fields.
