Position: Safety Basis Analyst 1/2 (All Shifts)

What You Will Do

The Safety Basis Division is looking for self‑motivated individuals who enjoy analyzing, writing and working within a multidisciplinary team. Our division is responsible for providing qualified regulatory and safety basis support resources to various Laboratory organizations for meeting compliance requirements. We work with programs, operations, the Department of Energy, and are involved with projects supporting new experiments and new facilities. Our division is responsible for writing and maintaining the Documented Safety Analyses along with numerous other Safety Basis documentation in support of the Laboratories mission.

This position will be filled at either the Safety Basis Analyst 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Safety Basis Analyst 1 ($94,500 - $154,600)

The successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but are not necessarily limited to: hazard identification, hazard analysis, facility hazard categorization, accident analysis, selection of controls, and development of associated safety basis documents including Unreviewed Safety Question Determinations, documented safety analysis, technical safety requirements, safety assessment documents, facility safety plans, and facility safety analysis.

Safety Basis Analyst 2 ($104,100 - $172,200)

In addition to the duties outlined at the lower level, at this level, the primary duties of this position include interpretation of plant processes for safety basis impact from schematics, procedures, verbal and written descriptions; performing qualitative and quantitative hazard analyses; performing fault‑tree and event‑tree analyses of complex engineered systems; quantifying significant accident sequences; and performing consequence analyses and performing Unreviewed Safety Questions Determinations.

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to apply standard and specialized engineering and scientific principles, theories, concepts and techniques to contribute to risk and hazard analyses for nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities
  • Ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings and schematics
  • Familiarity with nuclear and non‑nuclear facility systems and accepted methods for mitigation of risks from hazardous materials of facilities
  • Under instruction, contributes to the preparation and presentation of safety basis documents

Job Requirements for Safety Basis Analyst Level 2
  • Must have proven technical knowledge of risk assessment methodologies, as well as experience in performing, applying and reviewing nuclear and non‑nuclear hazards analyses (HAs) and Consequence Assessments
  • Experience performing Unreviewed Safety Question Determinations, knowledge of applicable DOE Standards and DOE Orders, and experience in working with these Standards and Orders
  • Experience managing risk assessment tasks and writing Safety Analysis Reports
Education/Experience at Safety Basis Analyst Level 1

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science related field from an accredited institution; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Safety Basis Analyst Level 2

This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

This position at the higher level is subject to DOE Order 426.2

DOE Order 426.2 establishes entry‑level requirements to ensure employees in the positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job. DOE 426.2 requires a BS degree, 2 years of job related experience and 1 year of non‑reactor nuclear experience for technical support personnel who perform work independently at nuclear facilities.
