What You Will Do

As a process engineer for C-AAC, the successful candidate(s) will work with SMEs on a variety of research instruments to implement and maintain Department of Energy standards for operation in Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities. This function is crucial to the plutonium pit production effort. The process engineer may also serve as a safety officer for one or more functions, such as pressure safety, electrical safety, etc.

This position serves as an interface between the programmatic group and facility engineering and maintains the baseline of analytical equipment in the nuclear facilities. Process Engineer is a certified position that usually takes 1 to 2 years to complete the certification. The process engineer will become qualified to perform hands‑on work in nuclear facilities, and will cultivate and maintain a working knowledge of the applicability of DOE Orders and working relationships with stakeholders within and without the C‑AAC organization.

R&D

Engineer 1 $ 94,500 - $154,600
  • Assists with the research, design, testing, analysis, verification, and validation of engineering and technology solutions in support of R&D initiatives.
  • Develops a technical approach, using judgment within defined practices and procedures, and makes technical decisions, including making preliminary selections and adaptations of technical alternatives, for assigned work.
  • Contributes to the completion of milestones associated with specific projects. May directly contribute to the achievement of programmatic objectives.
  • Maintains facility engineering baseline for analytical equipment in Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities.
  • Maintain/troubleshoot/repair instrumentation.
  • Completes LANL Process Engineering certification.
R&D Engineer 2 $ 104,100 - $211,300
  • In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Process Engineer serves as a primary interface with facility engineering and maintenance organizations, and works with DOE oversight organizations. Typical activities would include:
  • Provide technical leadership in developing, implementing, and/or documenting institutional Engineering Processes, Engineering Standards, and Engineering Training and Qualification programs for facility, programmatic/R&D and nuclear weapons related design and production work.
  • Work closely with other process engineers and the quality team to ensure quality requirements are met through engineering envelopes.
  • Provide engineering mentoring to scientists and engineers in training.

Job Requirements for R&D Engineer 2
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in installation and/or troubleshooting of research instrumentation, and maintenance of documentation related to research instrumentation.
Education/Experience

R&D Engineer 1:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

R&D Engineer 2:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

DOE Order 426.2A:
Requires a BS in engineering or related science, 2 years of job‑related experience and 1 year of Nuclear Experience.
