What You Will Do
The Thermomechanical Processing Sciences Team, in the Fabrication Manufacturing Science Group (Sigma-1), is seeking an engineer to lead metals forming and heat-treating projects. The Thermomechanical Processing Sciences Team leads various Research and Development (R&D) efforts investigating the forming and heat treating of metals and alloys. Our capabilities include rolling mills, hydraulic presses, power spinning, vacuum heat-treating furnaces, and various instruments for characterizing thermochemical properties of alloys.
We support a wide variety of programs with an emphasis on identifying creative solutions to meet our customer's needs.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to work effectively on both independent projects and as part of a team developing metallurgical solutions to manufacturing challenges. Your work will include leading small to medium size research and fabrication activities and implementing novel manufacturing solutions for complex parts. This position will also help develop advanced manufacturing solutions in collaboration with industrial partners and production agencies.
You will be expected to creatively apply scientific and engineering principles to address customer needs while maintaining conduct of operations for radiological/hazardous materials and secure workplace.
- Lead research projects with little to no supervision and report results to stakeholders both internal and external to the Laboratory.
- Develops and/or contributes ideas for new proposals and business development opportunities. Leads development of technical section of small to moderate proposals. Acquires internal/external funding for self.
- Develops new technical capabilities and creates opportunities to extend R&D engineering through the expansion of existing capabilities within the Team.
- Actively participates in professional societies, National Nuclear Security Administration/Department of Energy Complex interactions, special assignments, and/or external collaborations. Participates in external working groups and/or assists in organizing meetings and colloquia.
- Substantially mentor junior staff, postdoctoral associates, or students on research or manufacturing projects.
- Hands‑on work in an R&D manufacturing environment including work in radiological controlled areas or with hazardous materials.
Job Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading teams to realize research goals with broad technical impact. Proven ability to reach milestones and produce deliverables.
- Experience securing funding for yourself and technical project teams in a competitive funding environment. This can include research opportunities internal to an organization.
- Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially contributing to technical reports and archival publications. Demonstrated ability to interact with internal and external customers and management.
- Hands on experience with deep drawing, forging, rolling, wire drawing & swaging, and/or heat treating of metals and alloys and/or other fabrication techniques, or significant experience in metallurgical research.
Education/
Experience:
Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.
- Demonstrated project experience in security or energy related research where compliance and information protection are required.
- Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of manufacturing systems or modeling of metallurgical phenomena.
- Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" security clearance, which usually requires US citizenship.
Lifting 30+ pounds, standing, walking, Domestic/Foreign Travel.
Work EnvironmentWork near sources of ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, work in a noisy environment.
Work LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
