Merrick is seeking a Structural Equipment Engineer with 4+ years of experience to join our Nuclear Services & Technology (NST) Business Unit. The engineer will support design and retrofit projects for Department of Energy governmental facilities and equipment, including detailed design of mechanical equipment and glove boxes, performing engineering cost estimates, and collaborating with mechanical and electrical groups. This full‑time position is located in Aiken, SC;
Los Alamos, NM;
Greenwood Village, CO; or Oak Ridge, TN, with hybrid schedules considered.
Typical annual pay range: $81,600.00 – $. Pay may vary based on knowledge, skills, and experience.
What You’ll Do- Prepare engineering calculations and sketches, review drawings, and assist with project proposals, scopes, and budgets.
- Generate specifications, technical reports, and direct design staff in preparing drawings and other deliverables.
- Produce cost‑effective, customer‑friendly designs, drawings, and specifications.
- Coordinate interdisciplinary work to minimize deficiencies.
- Assist with design criteria, bid reviews, and 30%, 60%, and 90% design reviews.
- Develop complete structural design of steel, concrete, or combination structures following building and material codes.
- Recommend structural gravity/lateral support and foundation systems.
- Evaluate existing concrete and steel structures and provide reports on deficiencies.
- Prepare clear, complete calculations and connection designs as required.
- Review shop drawings, submittals, and construction‑related testing for compliance.
- Participate in pre‑construction meetings, perform site visits, and document progress.
- Assist with scope definition, budget, and schedule estimates for proposals.
- Monitor project progress, updating deadlines and advising the technical lead.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET‑accredited program.
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in industrial and manufacturing facilities.
- Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Proficiency in MS Office, MathCAD, AutoCAD, Revit, ACI 318, AISC 360, ASCE‑7, and IBC.
- Experience with finite‑element software (RISA‑3D, STAAD Pro, GT STRUDL, SAP 2000, or SAFE).
- U.S. citizenship required for client projects.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) and ability to obtain the PE license in New Mexico, South Carolina, Colorado, or Tennessee.
- Experience with DOE-STD‑1020 and other DOE project standards.
- Experience with ASME NQA‑1 quality assurance program.
- Knowledge of nuclear analysis and design codes (ASCE 4, ASCE 43, ACI 349, AISC N690).
- Experience in seismic analysis and qualification of mechanical equipment and glove boxes.
