Internship Overview
Los Alamos National Laboratory invites undergraduate students to join the Advanced Research in Cyber Systems Group (A‑4) for a paid internship during the current academic year and/or summer. Selected candidates receive a mentor, a challenging project, and the opportunity to present their work to colleagues.
Responsibilities- Conduct research and development across four primary areas: AI assurance, provably secure systems, critical system design and analysis, and cybersecurity workforce development.
- Apply AI assurance principles to anticipate risks of new machine learning innovations and develop guardrails.
- Perform hardware and software research to ensure systems operate within specified parameters and are resilient to attacks.
- Design and analyze “no‑fail” national security missions and operational technology for internal systems and other agencies.
- Deliver cybersecurity incident response training to federal, state, local, tribal, and international partners.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program; full‑time (at least 12 semester credit hours).
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.
- Provide a resume and transcript (or acceptance letter if transcripts not yet issued).
- Academic fields: Computer and Information Sciences, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Administration, Computer Networking, Computer Systems Analysis, Software Engineering, Information Systems Security Management, Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics.
- Knowledge/experience: Artificial intelligence/machine learning, computer forensics, network analysis, reverse engineering, cryptography, formal methods, statistics/mathematics, industrial control systems (ICS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), cyber‑physical systems, FPGA, software development, hardware programming.
- Location:
On‑site, Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at management discretion. - Type:
Internship (technology‑focused). - Requirements:
No security clearance required; drug testing and background checks will be performed.
