What You Will Do

The Mechanical Design Engineering Group in Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT‑MDE) is made up of mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, and administrative staff whose mission is to provide mechanical engineering support to a wide variety of accelerator technology related challenges in the service of the laboratory's national security mission. AOT‑MDE’s primary responsibility is the operation and maintenance of the LANSCE Accelerator Facility’s mechanical systems.

It is also heavily involved in design and drafting of the mechanical systems to support LANSCE accelerator-related projects. This position seeks a highly self‑motivated and technically inclined Designer/Drafter who will primarily be a CAD System Administrator and secondarily a drafter/designer.

Primary job responsibilities include:

  • Specifying computing systems based on individual user needs.
  • Setting up new computers and hardware.
  • Maintaining contracts for the CAD licenses.
  • Installing software on individual workstations.
  • Performing CAD system and server upgrades.
  • Developing and maintaining standardized CAD libraries and templates.
  • Performing design/drafting responsibilities to support group projects.
  • Assisting CAD and PDM users in resolving technical issues.

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Demonstrated mechanical design and drafting experience illustrating the ability to provide creative and practical solutions to a variety of design problems.
  • Experience with three‑dimensional Computer Aided Design programs such as Solid Works or CREO.
  • Use of drafting practices in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and proven ability to incorporate Geometric Design and Tolerancing (GD&T) concepts into working designs.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with scientists, engineers, machinists, and fabrication personnel.
  • Experience setting up new computer hardware, printers, scanners, plotters, etc.
  • Experience with installation, deployment, configuration, maintenance, troubleshooting and updates of software.
  • Experience providing technical support and assistance to end‑users, resolving system and software issues, and interacting with LANL IT personnel and CAD vendors.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience specifying computing systems; knowledge of CPU and GPU hardware requirements.
  • Experience performing data backups to prevent loss.
  • Familiarity with installing and configuring Solid Works CAD, PDM Professional, NX CAD and ANSYS simulation software.
  • Experience renewing maintenance contracts for Solid Works CAD, PDM Pro, NX CAD and ANSYS simulation software.
  • Ability to create and maintain CAD standards, including templates, folder structures, file‑naming conventions and library components.
Education & Experience

Position requires an Associate’s Degree in an Engineering or Technical field and 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Essential Job Functions

Peripheral vision, depth perception, reading vision, distance vision, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 Hz).

Physical requirements:
