Position: Undergrad Student ST 1/2

Undergrad Student ST 1/2 – Los Alamos National Laboratory

Engineering Services – Fire Protection Engineering (ES‑FPE) is seeking undergraduate students to join our engineering team. This internship provides mentoring, hands‑on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan that complements the student’s engineering education.

What You Will Do
  • Support review of fire protection system designs and calculations, including sprinkler, fire pump, fire alarm, and special hazard systems.
  • Analyze life safety requirements for buildings, including building code compliance, occupancy determination, occupant load calculations, and components of the means of egress.
  • Perform on‑site fire protection system evaluations and participate in final system testing.
  • Inspect buildings for hazard assessment and compliance.
  • Perform building and fire code analyses and interpretations; prepare fire hazards analysis and engineering evaluation documents.
  • Interface with facility project personnel and coordinate project designs with other engineering disciplines.
  • Perform analyses of existing fire protection systems to determine capabilities, shortcomings, and solutions to rectify deficiencies.
Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Must be currently enrolled (12 semester credit hours or full‑time equivalent) into an accredited undergraduate degree‑granting program in any engineering discipline, including but not limited to fire protection, mechanical, electrical, chemical, civil, nuclear, materials, or fire protection engineering technology.
  • Enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 12 graduate credit hours per semester (or equivalent full‑time enrollment) during the fall and spring semesters. Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a suitable undergraduate program.
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Desired Qualifications
  • Successful experience working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated excellent attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well (verbal and written) in a professional setting.
  • Previous experience in building design, construction, facilities, fire protection, or the fire service.
Work Location

On‑site in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
