What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Tech 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate(s). Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level. The Plutonium Capability Low Level Waste and Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) Waste Operations (NPI-10) working group is seeking highly motivated, customer service focused, and experienced Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technicians to join the TA55 LLW, CMR, RLUOB, RLW or WCRRF Operations teams.
The NPI-10 Group oversees and supports low level waste (LLW), mixed low-level waste (MLLW), and hazardous waste packaging and staging operations in PF4, CMR, RLUOB, WCRRF, and RLW facilities.
What You Will Do
As a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 or 4, you will work with all levels of staff to manage LLW/MLLW and hazardous waste packaging and staging operations across NPI-10 facilities. Specific duties include handling, lifting, downsizing and documenting hazardous and radioactive waste; packaging and handling fissile material; operating mechanical lifting equipment (forklifts); maintaining records for storage, inventory, inspections, waste profiles, disposal requests, shipping paperwork, and waste characterization information;
and following established procedures for routine work. For Tec 4, additional responsibilities include managing RCRA waste storage areas and contributing to IWDS, DOPs, or other work planning documents, among others.
Minimum
Job Requirements:
- Regulation: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to handling LLW/MLLW and hazardous materials; ability to understand hazards, safety practices, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
- Communication: Experience following detailed procedures and assisting in report preparation.
- Skills/Expertise: Experience operating forklifts or other mechanical lifting devices; ability to work with radioactive or hazardous materials; PPE knowledge and respirator qualification.
- Teamwork: Ability to work as a team member in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Certifications:
Ability to obtain and maintain Q-clearance and HRP certification. - Education/
Experience:
DOE Order 426.2; for Tec 3: associate degree and 3 years related experience or equivalent; for Tec 4: associate degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent.
Desired Qualifications for Tec 3: Knowledge of NNSS/LANL WACs, criticality safety, material control and accountability, radiological protection, safety basis compliance, waste minimization, and waste management; experience with WCATS/LANMAS; RAD WORKER, HAZWOPER, RCRA certifications; site training at WCRRF/RLUOB/PF-4/CMR/RLW.
Desired Skills for Tec 4: Two years of relevant experience; PIC duties for MLLW/LLW; knowledge of handling and transporting wastes; audits of material/management activities; forklift and crane operator certifications; familiarity with DOE Order 315; RCRA waste storage knowledge.
Education/Experience for Tec 4: Associate degree and 5 years related experience or equivalent; DOE Order 426.2 applies.
Additional DetailsTravel may occasionally be required. This position may require swing shifts, night shifts or weekend work. The facility conducts background checks and requires a Q clearance; HRP participation is mandatory. This position is subject to the Laboratory’s Drug Testing policy and DOE directives.
