Overview
Join to apply for the Engineering Technologist 2/3 - 805 MHz HPRF Team role at Los Alamos National Laboratory
.
The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group seeks an Engineering Technologist level 2 or level 3 for the 805 MHz HPRF team. The RFE group is responsible for all radio frequency (RF) systems and comprises three teams: (1) Low-Level RF (LLRF), (2) High-Power RF (HPRF) at 201 MHz, and (3) High-Power RF at 805 MHz.
Responsibilities- Contribute to the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the LANSCE 201.25-MHz and 805-MHz high-power RF (HPRF) systems, including high-voltage power supplies and related electronics, and high-power RF test stand development and operation.
- Plan and implement RF system upgrades with HV and RF engineers (e.g., new klystron amplifiers and solid-state high-voltage pulsed power systems).
- Prototype testing, data collection, and analysis for design refinement of klystrons and modulators.
- Provide on-call support for LANSCE HPRF systems after hours and on weekends (typical on-call ~one week per month during accelerator operations).
- Plan and manage maintenance activities; analyze RF system data to inform design improvements for performance and reliability; contribute to RF system upgrade projects (e.g., HV converter modulators and monitoring/control systems).
- Apply power electronics expertise to all group segments, especially in vacuum tube amplifiers and related equipment.
- For level 3: lead installation of new RF test stands and assist with specification development and procurement of amplifiers and pulsed power systems; lead project installation activities as applicable.
- Engineering Technologist 2: bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related field and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Engineering Technologist 3: bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related field and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent combination.
- Demonstrated experience in electrical engineering fields supporting microwave engineering, high-voltage and pulsed-power systems, RF power amplifiers, or RF transport systems.
- Experience reading schematics and working from documentation, diagrams, plans and instructions; experience creating electrical/electronic schematics using CAD.
- Experience producing technical procedures and communicating effectively in writing and orally.
- Experience with high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifiers and/or high-voltage systems; ability to translate requirements into designs meeting customer expectations.
- For level 3: experience leading design, development, testing and installation of high-power RF or high-voltage systems; ability to lead procurement and installation initiatives and data-driven performance analysis.
- Desirable: hands-on experience assembling, installing, testing, and troubleshooting high-power RF or pulsed-power systems; experience with PSPICE/Multisim/LTSPICE; accelerator facility operations.
- Engineering Technologist 2:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, science, math or related field and 5 years of related experience, or equivalent. - Engineering Technologist 3:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or engineering technology and 8 years of related experience, or equivalent.
For full consideration, please provide a detailed cover letter and resume explaining how you meet the minimum and desired qualifications.
