Job Summary
Mechanical Engineer 1/2 – Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)
The Engineering Services Division of LANL develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to support the Laboratory’s scientific and national security mission. This role is within the Engineering Services Weapons Project Delivery group (ES‑WPD) and will support nuclear, accelerator, or non‑nuclear facilities across the Laboratory.
Responsibilities- Learn about facilities mechanical systems design and operation from seasoned engineers.

- See your ideas come to life on paper and in construction.
- Be a design team member, developing engineering judgement.
- Navigate and implement prevailing industry codes and standards.
- Promote energy conservation through HVAC technologies and building systems controls.
- Perform HVAC calculations.
- Obtain, evaluate, and compare equipment selections from manufacturer representatives.
- Develop design deliverables including drawings, specifications, test and inspection plans (TIPs), statements of special inspections (SSIs), and calculations.
- Level 2 only:
- Independently run all mechanical engineering facets of a project from scoping through construction.
- Foster relationships with project stakeholders and customers as a representative of Engineering Services.
- Facilitate the technical growth of the electrical design team.
Job Requirements
- Support timely and collaborative construction execution, including review of submittals, RFIs, design changes, non‑conformance issues, validation of commissioning documentation, and production of accurate as‑built documents.
- Basic knowledge of engineering principles, codes, and standards.
Job Requirements for Mechanical Engineer Level 2
- Knowledge of HVAC and plumbing building systems.
- Knowledge of engineering work planning and design coordination.
- Ability to collaboratively problem‑solve, show commitment, and function well in a team environment.
- Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering principles.
- Ability to apply building codes, standards, and green initiatives to facilities design.
- Demonstrated proficiency in generating calculations.
- Mechanical Engineer 1:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and 2 years of practical work experience. - Mechanical Engineer 2:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience. Advanced engineering or technical degree desired. - Minimum requirement:
Bachelor's degree and 1 year of nuclear experience.
- For Engineer 2:
Current registration as a professional engineer (any US state). - Design experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facility operations.
- Master’s degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit tools.
- Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
