Nuclear Facilities Engineer
What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either the Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional responsibilities will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Levels- Nuclear Facilities Engineer 1 – Salary range $94,500 - $154,600. Responsibilities include serving as SME for nuclear facility electrical, mechanical, and structural engineering matters, electrical safety, HVAC, power quality, fluid/utility systems, power monitoring, critical power reliability, renovating rooms, modifying buildings and structural members, developing new structures, engineering studies (short circuit, device coordination, equipment sizing, exterior lighting, fault current, arc flash), demolition, installation upgrades, etc.
Familiarity with pressure safety, leak testing, piping supports, crane design, canopies, equipment support stands, conduit supports, penetrations, concrete slabs. - Nuclear Facilities Engineer 2 – Salary range $104,100 - $172,200. In addition to the above, work alongside junior and senior engineers, provide full‑system design solutions, mentoring and leadership.
Job Requirements
- Broad knowledge with major commercial, industrial, or nuclear facility with strong background in facility related systems (HVAC, Compressed Air).
- Fundamental knowledge of design, operation, and maintenance of facility related mechanical systems.
- Knowledge of troubleshooting mechanical systems.
- Experience with codes and standards in a highly regulated environment (IBC, IEBC, ASHRE, B31).
- Ability to perform analysis and calculations supporting engineered solutions.
- Effective communication of engineering solutions verbally and in writing with management, customers, peers, and maintenance personnel.
- Prepare and review technical reports and studies for new and existing facility structural systems.
- Define and collect usage, process, safety and other requirements for design or analysis tasks.
- Develop design details, calculations, load studies, specifications, and special inspections, including nuclear safety requirements.
- Evaluate and trend system health.
- Interface and coordinate with other disciplines and customers as Mechanical SME.
- Mentor engineering interns and other engineers.
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and 2 years of practical work experience for Engineer 1; 3 years of practical experience for Engineer
2. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
- Experience with chilled water systems.
- Experience with mechanical system computational software (AFT Fathom/Arrow, Pipe Flow, Train Trace).
- Experience with nuclear air handling system requirements.
- Experience with DOE Orders and Standards as related to facility systems.
- Experience working within an ASME NQA‑1 or similar quality program.
General physical: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific physical: use both hands, arms, legs, feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
Work Environment and ConditionsNoisy environment, exposure to ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, machinery with moving parts, overtime or irregular schedule.
Work LocationLos Alamos, NM.
Work ScheduleMay require 24/7 coverage, shift/weekend schedule. Shift/weekend assignments at the discretion of the manager. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay.
Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees must serve a period of continuous service for eligibility for other job postings. Commitment: 1 year.
Security and ClearancePosition requires Q clearance and clearance to this level. US citizenship required except in rare circumstances. Eligibility requires minimum 18 years, US citizenship. Clearance under directives 206.2 and DOE Order 142.3A.
Other Requirements- Subject to DOE Human Reliability Program (10 CFR 712).
- Requirement to complete new‑employment drug test; substance abuse policy and random drug testing.
