What You Will Do
The Advanced Sources and Detector (ASD) Project Office is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and commissioning of an ~ 20 MeV linear induction electron accelerator, through the coordination of efforts at Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS). Nicknamed Scorpius, the machine will be used to diagnose subcritical experiments at the NNSS, within an underground complex (U1a;
963 feet below grade) in support of the Enhanced Capabilities for Subcritical Experiments Program. The ASD Project needs an engineering technologist to help construct several parts of the accelerator including tasks of: IVAs, SAC subassemblies, SAC assemblies, LRU-8 integration, coordinate with inventory area, and project planning and assembly of the accelerator subsystem.
As the Engineering Technologist for the ASD Project, you will work with the Accelerator IVA, SAC subassembly, SAC assembly, and LRU-8 engineering team to procure, kit and assemble components. These components will be installed at the U1a complex at the NNSS. You will coordinate work and work with engineers and other SME’s on assembly steps. This position may include travel to vendors and to NNSS and LLNL and will report to the ASD operations manager.
As the ASD Engineering technologist, you will be responsible for the following:
- Fabrication, assembly and testing of accelerator and downstream region components.
- Work closely with Production Engineer on work associated with assembly.
- Work with various teams and deployed safety people.
- Ensure components have been inspected and staged ready for use.
- Ensure quality assurance (SD330) and 413.3B project requirements.
- Look for opportunities to enhance the assembly.
- Work with the technical team to coordinate opportunities and efficiencies between the subsystems for Scorpius.
- Provide maintenance support for major personnel and equipment.
- Work closely with technicians and engineers from our own and other maintenance support teams across the facility.
- Interact and collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues at the team, group, division, and laboratory levels.
- Complete all training in a reasonable time.
Job Requirements
- Engineering Technologist 1 - $85,900 - $139,900
- Basic understanding of drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Experience assembling and disassembling parts from drawings and procedures.
- Familiarity with common lab test equipment: digital multi‐meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment, as well as function independently on individual assignments.
- Ability to use standard shop tools such as drills, saws, punches.
- The ability to obtain forklift and crane certification.
- Engineering Technologist 2 - $94,500 - $154,600
- Working knowledge of drawings and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Working knowledge of Solid Works, CREO to design and fabricate components.
- Intermediate experience assembling and disassembling parts from drawings and procedures.
- Working knowledge of common lab test equipment: digital multi‐meters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, etc. li>
- Be familiar with vacuum systems, KF, CF, roughing pumps and turbomolecular pumps.
- Swagelok, plumbing NPT for PVC Pipe Fitting, ANSI and Metric threads.
The Engineering Technologist 1 position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree and 2 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher levelThe Engineering Technologist 2 position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications- Current forklift and crane certification.
- Experience working with drawing and procedures.
- Understanding disciplined operations.
- Knowledge of accelerator systems and components.
