Position: Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3/4

This position will be filled at either the Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate(s). Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Plutonium Capability Low Level Waste and Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF) Waste Operations (NPI-10) working group is looking for highly motivated, customer service focused, and highly experienced individual(s) to serve as Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technicians to join the TA55 LLW, CMR, RLUOB, RLW or WCRRF Operations team(s). The NPI-10 Group oversees and supports low level waste (LLW), mixed low-level waste (MLLW), and hazardous waste packaging and staging operations in Plutonium Facility 4 (PF4), Chemical and Metallurgical Research (CMR), and Radiological Laboratory/Utility/Office Building (RLUOB), Waste Characterization, Reduction, and Repackaging Facility (WCRRF), and the Radioactive Liquid Waste (RLW) facility.

Responsibilities

As a Nuclear & Hazardous Materials Technician 3 with NPI-10 you will work directly with all levels of staff to manage low‑level, mixed low‑level waste, and hazardous waste packaging and staging operations throughout NPI‑10 facilities. Specific job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • handle, lift, downsize and document hazardous and radioactive waste exhibiting chemical and radiological hazards in accordance with written work instruction;
  • package and handle fissile material;
  • operate mechanical lifting equipment, including electric and diesel‑powered forklifts;
  • perform upkeep and maintenance of records reflecting storage area, inventory and inspections, waste profiles, disposal requests, shipping paperwork, and waste characterization information;
  • foster a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment;
  • follow established procedures for routine work.

For Technician 4, additional responsibilities include operating mechanical lifting equipment, managing RCRA waste storage areas with knowledge of chemical storage, segregation, and handling requirements, and contributing to Integrated Work Documents, Detailed Operating Procedures, or other work planning documents.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements

Regulation: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to the handling of low‑level waste, mixed low‑level waste, and hazardous materials. Demonstrated skill in understanding work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock‑out/tag‑out policies and procedures.

Communication: Demonstrated experience following detailed procedures effectively, both orally and in writing, and demonstrated experience in aiding in the preparation of reports.

Skills/Expertise: Demonstrated experience operating mechanical equipment such as forklifts or other types of mechanical lifting devices; ability to work with radioactive or other hazardous materials as dictated by programmatic needs; demonstrated experience with nuclear facility personal protective equipment (PPE) such as anti‑contamination clothing, booties, a variety of safety gloves, and be able to obtain full‑face respirator qualification.

Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to work as a team member in a conscientious, professional, and responsible manner in a multi‑disciplinary environment, and interacting effectively with a variety of organizations.

Clearance and Mandatory

Certifications:

Ability to obtain and maintain Q‑clearance and Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification.
