The Pit Technologies (PT) Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is the operational group at the forefront of plutonium pit manufacturing and surveillance, which enables the modernization and continued stewardship of the United States' thermonuclear weapons stockpile. This position is assigned to the Tooling Design Team within the Engineering and Product Support Group (PT‑5).
Support the development of tooling and equipment for all Pit Technologies groups and operations. Design work includes tooling design and prototyping, reverse engineering, rapid prototyping, and process development. Designs must be fit for use in a Category 2 nuclear facility.

- Lead continuous process improvement projects
- Complete challenging or novel design projects with little to no supervision
- Resolve a wide range of issues creatively and contribute to the team’s goals and objectives
Job Requirements
- Basic knowledge of computer‑aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design
- Basic understanding of modeling and drawing drafting principles, application of standards, symbols, notes, GD&T on drawings and models to capture design intent
- Basic understanding of ASME, ANSI, AWS and related industry standards for addressing fit, form and function
- Basic knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods
- Basic understanding of engineering, design, and drafting concepts related to mechanical, electro‑mechanical or electrical disciplines
- Basic knowledge of principles for design, fabrication, assembly and fielding of components and mechanisms
- Basic understanding of component and tool design, fixturing, printed circuit boards, schematics, and facility equipment
- Basic understanding of machine shop equipment like a mill, lathe, drill press, welder and inspection equipment
- Basic understanding of engineering materials and their suitability for component design and manufacture
- Experience working in diverse teams, collaborating on novel designs from rough sketches with minimal guidance from a senior level technician

- Working knowledge and proficiency in the above skills and knowledge areas
- The ability and desire to mentor lower‑level designers and check their work for accuracy and adequacy
Engineering Technologist 1:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education directly related to the occupation.
Engineering Technologist 2:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
- Experience with Creo Parametric and PDMLink
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with GD&T; an ASME GDTP Technologist certification is desired at the higher level
- Demonstrated knowledge of reverse engineering and rapid prototyping
- Demonstrated technical knowledge of production processes related to manufacturing
- Demonstrated experience with mathematical formulas, computations, and data gathering methods
- Active DOE "Q" clearance (or equivalent)
