Position: Engineered Systems Tec 3 - 805 MHz HPRF Team

Overview

Engineered Systems Tec 3 - 805 MHz HPRF Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group is seeking an R&D Engineer Level 2 or Level 3 for the 805 MHz HPRF team. The AOT division maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator systems used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These include two 750-keV injector systems (H+ and H-), a 201.25-MHz drift-tube LINAC using high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity LINAC using high-power klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines delivering beam to five independent research programs.

The RFE group is responsible for all RF systems and consists of three teams: (1) Low-Level RF (LLRF); (2) High-Power RF (HPRF) at 201 MHz; and (3) High-Power RF at 805 MHz. The successful candidate will be offered a position on the AOT-RFE 805 MHz HPRF team and will perform technical installation and/or maintenance functions supporting engineering activities related to RF controls.

The role requires working closely with engineers and technicians to meet LLRF and group technical goals and deliverables, defining technical requirements, managing multiple tasks and projects, building new electronic and RF hardware, repairing and maintaining legacy systems, coordinating interfaces with other LANSCE teams, preparing engineering documentation, and using the accelerator operations maintenance database to track system performance.

Responsibilities
  • Install, maintain, commission, and repair electrical/electronic equipment and systems related to RF controls.
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians to meet project goals and deliverables.
  • Define technical requirements and manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Build and repair RF hardware; maintain legacy systems.
  • Manage technical interfaces with other LANSCE teams and document engineering activities.
  • Track system performance using the accelerator operations maintenance database.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience using basic electronic test equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, voltmeters).
  • Ability to read and understand electrical wiring diagrams or schematics; work from documentation, diagrams, rough sketches, layouts, and verbal instructions.
  • Experience performing installation, maintenance, commissioning, and repairs on electrical/electronic equipment and/or systems.
  • Experience producing clear written technical documents and communications (procedures, technical support).
  • Experience troubleshooting circuits with multiple components.
  • Experience using AutoCAD or similar CAD to open and view schematics or drawings.
  • Ability to complete Forklift training and obtain certification.
  • Ability to complete and obtain incidental crane certification.
  • Ability to provide after-hours primary on-call support approximately one week out of four weeks.
Education/Experience

Position requires an associate degree in a related field and a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with particle accelerator operations or similar facilities.
  • Familiarity with Conduct of Operations and Conduct of Research principles.
  • Experience with installation and testing of high-power RF devices/systems, high-voltage and pulsed-power devices/systems, RF amplifiers, DC and pulsed-power systems, or RF transport systems (cables, coaxial lines, wave guides).
  • Experience relating to installation of high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifier systems and high-voltage systems.
  • Experience with maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of high-power RF systems.
Notes to Applicants

For full consideration, please provide a detailed cover letter and resume explaining how you meet the minimum and desired qualifications.
