Research Scientist
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. The Technology Applications group (A-3) is searching for a postdoctoral researcher who has a core background in electrical engineering concepts including applied electromagnetics and/or acoustics.
What You Will DoThis postdoc will primarily work with the A-3 group, which consists of approximately 45 full‑time staff from various educational backgrounds including electrical and mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, physicists, and students spread across multiple technical areas and within a variety of laboratory spaces and field environments. Additionally, the postdoc will collaborate with other groups, divisions, and directorates supporting this broad mission space.

Job Requirements
- Ph.D. in Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field, earned within the last five years or soon to be completed
- Strong technical background in one or more of the following areas:
Theoretical or experimental electromagnetics, acoustics, and signal processing - Ability to obtain DOE Q clearance (usually requires a US citizenship)
- Experience with electronics and typical laboratory test instruments relating to RF/microwave and acoustic work such as network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, function generators, oscilloscopes, hydrophones, and ultrasonic transducers
- Signal processing and data analysis for RF and/or acoustic measurements
- Developing, implementing, and testing machine learning methods with standard ML software packages like PyTorch or Scikit‑learn
- Fluency in one or more computer programming languages like Matlab, Python, or C++
- Experience with numerical modeling platforms like COMSOL, CST, or Ansys
- Demonstration of conducting original scientific research through peer‑reviewed publication or conference record
The work location for this position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
ClearanceQ clearance required. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance and obtaining such clearance requires US citizenship, except in extremely rare circumstances.
