What You Will Do

ASD Scorpius is seeking a highly motivated Deputy Group Leader (DGL) for ADEF Tunnel Building 365 Operations (R&D Manager
3) for the ASD Technical and Project Support Group. The selected candidate will provide both technical and managerial leadership for a team of engineers, scientists, technicians, and support staff to assemble and test Accelerator cells and modules, Downstream Transport subsystems, and other components in the ADEF tunnel.

The DGL will assist the project in meeting quality, schedule, and cost objectives by planning and executing work in accordance with the project schedule, identifying opportunities to enhance assembly and testing, establishing priorities and deconflicting execution when needed, and providing regular reporting to project leadership on progress and issues.

Other duties include managing hazards and housekeeping within the tunnel, championing quality assurance and control, overseeing downstream purchasing needed for operations, and leading plan‑of‑the‑day meetings.

The DGL will support the group leader in achieving operational excellence by developing and refining assembly procedures, ensuring on‑time completion and delivery of ASD components, adhering to the Code of Record, maintaining an impeccable safety and security record, and fostering a respectful and inclusive work environment.

What You Need Minimum

Job Requirements

Leadership

  • Demonstrated record of excellent leadership, management, and supervisory skills, including professional‑level experience in operations support and coordination.
  • Demonstrated record of effective decision‑making and creative problem‑solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong teaming skills and demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and build consensus.

Technical Competence

  • Strong technical expertise in areas such as electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • Strong background in overseeing the assembly and testing of highly technical systems or components.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact and present technical issues to audiences with various technical backgrounds.
  • Experience providing technical direction, mentoring, and coordinating/monitoring the work of others.

Facility Operations

  • Demonstrated experience implementing Conduct of Operations, such as Safe Conduct of Research (SCoR) principles or an equivalent safety program.
  • Experience developing technical work procedures, providing on‑the‑job training, applying standard safety practices, and understanding regulations as they apply to operations dealing with radioactive materials, hazardous metals, confined spaces, and chemical hazards.

Education / Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of particle accelerator design or operations.
  • Experience in executing work and projects using the formality of operations principles (e.g., Conduct of Operations).
  • Experience in conflict resolution and in dealing with performance issues.
  • Experience managing resources in a multi‑shift environment.
  • Knowledge of downstream purchasing procedures.
  • Training or experience in project management, including the ability to use a Primavera project schedule to plan and execute work and an understanding of Earned Value Management.
  • Experience in planning or executing large, highly complex technical projects.
  • Training or experience in systems.
  • Active Q Clearance.
Work Environment

Work Location:

The work location for this position is onsite at the LANL ADEF (Building 365) tunnel and associated spaces (AREA‑A) in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
