Position: Engineered Systems Tec 4/5 - 805 MHz HPRF Team

Overview

Engineered Systems Tec 4/5 - 805 MHz HPRF Team at Los Alamos National Laboratory

Role involves working within the Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT), Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group as part of the High Power RF (HPRF) team. The RFE group is responsible for all RF systems with three sub-teams:
Low-Level RF (LLRF), High-Power RF at 201 MHz, and High-Power RF at 805 MHz. This position may be filled at Engineered Systems Tec 4 or Tec 5 level depending on the candidate's skills.

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will contribute to the operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of the LANSCE 201.25-MHz and 805-MHz HPRF systems, including high-voltage power supplies and associated electronics, and high-power RF test stand development and operation. Responsibilities also include working with HV and RF engineers to plan and implement RF system upgrades (e.g., new klystron amplifiers and solid-state HV pulsed power systems), prototype testing, data collection and analysis for design refinement, and providing on-call support after hours and on weekends (typically one week per month during accelerator operations, ~7 months/year).

The role includes planning, managing, and analyzing RF system data to inform design enhancements, and contributing to RF system upgrade projects such as HV converter modulator power systems and klystron modulator monitoring and control systems. The position also provides power electronics expertise to the group, especially related to vacuum tube amplifiers and related equipment.

Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Engineered Systems Tec 4:
Demonstrated technical leadership supporting competency in microwave engineering (high-voltage and pulsed-power engineering, RF power amplifiers, DC and pulsed-power systems, microwave and RF components, or RF transport systems).
  • Demonstrated experience in electrical, electronics, and mechanical skills in an industrial or laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics, work from documentation, diagrams, rough sketches, layouts, plans, and written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to create electrical and electronic schematics using CAD.
  • Experience producing written documents and effective oral communication skills.
  • Experience working with others in the design, development, testing and installation of high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifier systems and high-voltage systems.
  • Technical skill in developing advanced concepts for high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifier systems and high-voltage systems.
  • Experience implementing engineering design in accordance with best practices and engineering principles.
  • Skills in applying best practices and system engineering processes to requirements definition and translating those requirements into designs that meet customer expectations.
Education/Experience at Level 4

Position requires an associate’s degree in a related field and a minimum of 5 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.

Education/Experience at Level 5

Position requires an associate’s degree in a related field and 7 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, additional training and/or certification may be expected.

Desired Qualifications
  • Contributions to the design, development, testing, and installation of high-power RF vacuum tube-based amplifier systems, high-voltage or pulsed power systems.
  • Experience working as part of a team to develop RF amplifiers and/or high-voltage systems.
  • Recent hands-on experience assembling, installing, testing and troubleshooting high-power RF or pulsed power systems.
  • Experience with high-voltage DC and pulsed-power systems.
  • Experience with computer-based circuit layout and simulation (PSPICE, Multisim, LTSPICE, etc.).
  • Operations experience at an accelerator facility.
