V-6, Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation, provides research, development, and application of state-of-the-art nondestructive inspections for diverse internal and external programmatic missions. Current group capabilities include x-ray and neutron radiography, computed tomography, ultrasonics, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy, eddy current, dye penetrant, magnetic particle and x-ray fluorescence, as well as x-ray, ultrasound and eddy current simulation.
The staff is comprised of R&D engineers and scientists with backgrounds in physics, engineering, applied mathematics and computer science, as well as engineering technologists and process and sampling technicians.
Interns will be introduced to and taught a wide variety of nondestructive testing and evaluation techniques. Interns will select a project to pursue that best fits their interests and advances the group's capabilities. Potential project topics include, but are not limited to:
- Computed tomography automation
- Noncontact density evaluation
- Radiography acquisition and reconstruction code development
- Laser-based high energy radiography system development
- X-ray spectroscopy and detector performance
- Photoacoustic ultrasonic inspection
- Eddy current inspection
- Ultrasonic nondestructive testing
