Health Physics Analysis Laboratories Technician 3 or 4 - Shift C

Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a Health Physics Analysis Laboratories Technician to support the Laboratory’s Nuclear Security Mission. This role will analyze a wide variety of samples for radioactive materials, perform non‑destructive measurements, and support QA activities at the TA‑55 Plutonium Facility during evening and night shifts.

What You Will Do

Depending on the level (Process and Sampling Technician 3 or
4) the candidate will be responsible for:

  • Performing instrument checks and calibrations of HPAL detection systems.
  • Analyzing samples and validating data against quality specifications.
  • Preparing reports and supporting troubleshooting and QA activities.
  • Operating and maintaining radiation detection instrumentation.
  • Monitoring data trends and assisting in the development of new or revised procedures.
  • Providing occasional training to less experienced staff (Technician
    3) or leading and guiding complex analytical processes and mentoring staff (Technician
    4).
  • Overseeing calibration and maintenance of detection instrumentation (Technician
    4).
  • Reviewing and approving analytical results, QA measurements, and corrective actions (Technician
    4).
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of procedure revisions (Technician
    4).
  • Coordinating with internal and external groups to resolve complex issues (Technician
    4).
Minimum

Job Requirements
  • Knowledge of ionizing radiation, radiological units, radiation detection principles, and calculations.
  • Experience in radiological measurements and data interpretation.
  • Experience in preparing electronic report forms and data entry.
  • High attention to detail; commitment to data integrity.
  • Problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring abilities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to wear PPE and follow safety protocols in a radiological environment.
  • Ability to obtain a Q clearance.
Additional Requirements for Process and Sampling Technician 4
  • Advanced knowledge of ionizing radiation and related principles.
  • Senior-level experience in radiological measurements.
  • Expertise in preparing and presenting test‑measurement results.
  • Independent resolution of analytical or instrumentation issues.
  • Experience overseeing QA/QC activities and corrective actions.
  • Leadership and direct supervision of others.
Education / Experience
  • Process and Sampling Technician 3:
    Associate’s Degree in radiological sciences or related field and 3 years of direct experience, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Process and Sampling Technician 4:
    Associate’s Degree and 5 years of direct experience, or equivalent.
  • DOE Order 426.2A requires a High School Diploma.
Desired Qualifications
  • Instrument calibration and maintenance experience.
  • Operation of Berthold LB770/ LB790 gas‑flow proportional counters.
  • Operation of Perkin‑Elmer Tri Carb liquid scintillation counters.
  • NRRPT certification.
Work Schedule

Schedule C – Day 4×10 hours Friday – Monday 6:00 am‑4:30 pm; evening and night shifts with weekend work required.

Essential Job Functions

Key physical and cognitive functions include peripheral vision, reading vision, hearing, speaking, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, reaching, typing, fine motor control, lifting 20‑30 lb, and other functions listed.

Work Environment

Work near sources of ionizing radiation; often alone or in irregular schedules; safety equipment such as PPE, eye protection, gloves, and protective footwear required.

Work Location

Los Alamos, NM (onsite).

Position Commitment

Employees must serve a continuous 1‑year period in the current position to be eligible for other LANL positions.

Clearance & Eligibility

This position requires Q clearance and is subject to DOE Order 472.2 and 426.2. U.S. citizenship is required except in rare circumstances.
