- Program, set up, and operate manual and CNC mills and lathes for the safe manufacturing of high explosive (HE) components and assemblies of varying complexity, including fixture and tool selection, conversation programming on the machine, CAM programming, and other typical machining functions.
- At the Machinist 5 level, lead the machining of the most complex HE components, utilizing advanced programming methods, fixture design, tooling selection and purchase, and all other technical aspects of machining HE components.
Job Requirements
- Technical Knowledge: Demonstrated experience working from complex drawings, sketches, and/or verbal instructions to facilitate the manufacture of parts and assemblies by programming, setting up, and operating manual and CNC mills and lathes. Comprehensive understanding of Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and experience in shop mathematics and English–Metric unit conversions including applied trigonometry.
- Communication: Excellent communication skills, strong organizational approach, attention to detail, and proactive solution‑seeking when interacting with engineers, machinists, inspectors, and other stakeholders.
- Leadership: Demonstrated record of dependability, reliability, and commitment to long‑term job duties and programmatic goals.
Job Requirements for Machinist 5
- Technical Knowledge: Advanced knowledge of CAM programming principles on complex geometries, tooling and fixturing design and fabrication, and machining techniques and processes.
- Communication: Advanced proficiency in oral, written, and interpersonal communication, including the ability to work with a diverse technical team on multiple concurrent tasks with changing priorities.
- Leadership: Advanced proficiency in oral, written, and interpersonal communication, including the ability to lead a diverse technical team.
- Machinist 4: Associate’s Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 6 years of experience; or 8 years prototype experience; or Journeyperson qualification program and 6 years of experience.
- Machinist 5: Associate’s Degree (AAS) in Machining Technologies or equivalent precision metalworking program and 10 years of experience; or 12 years prototype experience; or Journeyperson qualification program and 10 years of experience.
- Experience with Mastercam software
- Experience operating CAD software, Creo or Solid Works preferred
- LANL HE Handler or experience in handling hazardous materials
- Multi‑axis machining experience

Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. The position commitment is one year.
