2)

The Nuclear Materials Science group (MST-16) is seeking a research technologist to help advance the scientific output of a recently completed electron microscopy laboratory dedicated to plutonium and actinide research.

This position is ideal for pursuing a non-academic career track with the opportunity to work in an area of materials science that is available at only a few places in the world. In this role, you will be managing the electron microscopy instruments and resources to aid actinide research. Responsibilities will include acting as the primary maintenance contact for our SEM/FIB and Cs-corrected (S)
TEM, coordinating activities with staff from across the lab, training users, managing documents, running experiments, and collecting data.

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • Experience with (scanning) transmission electron microscopy and/or focused ion beam operation.
  • Experience with complementary data analysis software (e.g., image processing, EBSD, EDS, or EELS processing; custom data processing using Python, R, or similar).
  • Experience with sample preparation for electron microscopy.
  • Strong organizational and collaborative skills to manage daily laboratory operations and work with a multitude of people spanning various backgrounds.
  • The ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance and Human Reliability Program certification.

Desired

Qualifications:

  • Experience working in inert glove boxes.
  • Experience working with new users and collaborators.
  • Experience with other material characterization techniques.
  • Experience working in a radiological or nuclear facility.
  • Experience working collaboratively with service engineers on microscope maintenance issues.
