What You Will Do

The Scattering Team within Materials Science & Technology (MST-8) is seeking a highly motivated experimentally inclined post-master's student with strong background in robotics, metrology or computer science to develop an advanced positioning system employing a 6+ degree-of-freedom robotic arm for positioning and a laser tracker for position and orientation verification of complex shaped components. The successful candidate will be working in a highly interdisciplinary team with diverse backgrounds, and will be self-motivated, team-oriented, and communicative.

Minimum

Job Requirements:

  • Strong background in metrology, robotics, computer science and/or related fields.
  • Hands‑on experience with operation of computer controlled positioning and/or metrology systems.
Education/Experience

Master's degree in robotics, metrology, computer science, or related discipline completed within the last 2 years.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with 6D (X, Y, Z, RotX, RotY, RotZ) robotic arms.
  • Experience with measurement of size, shape, location and orientation of complex shaped components.
  • Experience with development of user‑friendly software to operate robotics and/or metrology equipment.
Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule

Onsite, M-F, 8/40, 9/80 or 4.5/40.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance:
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre‑employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test:
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new‑employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre‑offer.
