NSRC Library and Information Science Graduate Student
Full‑time, summer graduate student to support our Collections Management Team on archival projects at the National Security Research Center (NSRC), Los Alamos National Laboratory. This is an onsite position.
What You Will DoYou will be working at the NSRC, Los Alamos National Laboratory's classified library, containing millions of documents, films, books, and other archival materials related to the development, testing, and production of nuclear weapons.
This position will engage in digitizing, cataloging, and uploading materials to repositories for an estimated 50% of the time and assist in controlled vocabulary and taxonomy development for the remaining 50%. The role may be a multi‑summer position, with the first summer focused on unclassified materials and, if a Q clearance is obtained, subsequent summers involving classified workflows.
Responsibilities- Digitization of archival materials (paper, still image negatives)
- Cataloging and upload of digitized materials to repositories
- Assist in the research and creation of controlled vocabularies and taxonomies
- Develop digitization skills
- Gain experience in digital asset management, repository, and cataloging practices
- Obtain hands‑on experience in taxonomy development
- Contribute to the preservation and access of materials regarding national security and scientific history
Job Requirements
- Familiarity with digital asset management systems
- Interest in controlled vocabularies and ontology development
- Understanding of digital preservation best practices, including digital workflows, metadata standards, and a variety of file formats
- Strong organization and research skills with the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion
- Professional communication skills and the ability to work both in teams and on independent projects while fostering a respectful, inclusive environment
- Comfort with ambiguity in an iterative development setting
- Studies focused on ontology development, archives, digital preservation, or information science
- Currently enrolled in a full‑time graduate program in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a closely related field
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
- Ability to obtain a Q clearance (U.S. citizenship required, except in rare circumstances)
- Commitment to a multi‑summer internship
- Interest in programming languages (Python, XML, SQL)
- Familiarity with the principles of taxonomy, classification, and ontologies and experience with Protégé
- Experience with digitization equipment
- Interest in the history of science and technology
