Detonation Physics Research Technologist (Research Technologist 2/3)

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory to work on high‑explosive diagnostics and sensor development, supporting the Shock and Detonation Physics Group (M‑9).

What You Will Do

The position may be filled at either the Research Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on your skills and experience. Your responsibilities include helping define project specifications, ensuring final products meet requirements, and contributing to capability development with minimal supervision. Working collaboratively, you will solve complex problems, develop new techniques and concepts, and support the safe handling of energetic materials. You will also document and communicate results, mentor junior staff, and verify the quality of completed work.

Qualifications
  • Machine complex inert test components using manual and CNC mills and lathes.
  • Contribute to shot design using CAD software.
  • Assist with preparation of explosive assemblies, precision assembly, and alignment of shot and diagnostic stands.
  • Maintain TA40 machining areas and our indoor experimental high‑explosive testing facility.
  • Work to defined requirements and regulations such as document control and security.
  • Demonstrate a positive work attitude and the ability to take on new tasks independently.
  • Assume responsibility and work with high accuracy.
  • Learn and practice the safe handling of explosive materials in a rigorous safety environment.
  • Work as part of a team and suggest continuous improvements.
  • Organize projects with detailed documentation from start to finish.
  • Plan projects, including ordering parts and materials.
  • Lead subsections of a project to meet complex deliverables and deadlines.

Additional requirements for Research Technologist 3 include expert‑level knowledge of high‑explosive R&D, proof of laboratory policies and procedures, and experience with precision assembly, firing, or manufacturing of necessary components.

Education and Experience:

  • Research Technologist 2:
    Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience (or equivalent).
  • Research Technologist 3:
    Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience (or equivalent).
Desired Qualifications
  • Handling energetic materials with LANL High Explosive qualification (Handler, Assembly/Disassembly operator).
  • Journeyman machinist qualification.
  • LANL procurement and ordering experience.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, digitizers, pressure sensors, or high‑speed imaging equipment.
  • Experience with laser‑based optical techniques such as PDV (Photonic Doppler Velocimetry).
