Position Overview
Outreach Counselor Assistant – Black Student Recruitment (CSUN). The role supports enrollment of prospective undergraduate Black students and first‑time or transfer students.
Major DutiesPosition level depends on applicant’s qualifications: SSP IA, SSP IB or SSP II.
- SSP IA: Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Student Outreach, responsible for increasing enrollment of prospective undergraduate Black students. Tasks include conducting outreach and recruitment services, establishing relationships with college counselors, parents, students, and communities, conducting speaking engagements and workshops, assisting with department‑wide events, providing presentations on the CSU system, EOP, financial aid, application process, tele‑counseling, and the master plan of higher education in California, and compiling recruitment data and reports.
- SSP IB: Under the supervision of the Associate Director of Student Outreach, conducts school site outreach activities, assists with implementing plans of action related to outreach and recruitment of prospective Black students (first‑time freshman and transfer). Conducts speaking engagements and workshops, assists with department‑wide events, provides presentations on the CSU system, EOP, financial aid, application process, pre‑enrollment follow‑up, tele‑counseling, and the master plan of higher education in California, compiles recruitment data and prepares reports.
- SSP II: Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Student Outreach, supports recruitment and enrollment goals. Coordinates school site outreach, organizes and implements activities related to outreach of prospective first‑time freshman and transfer Black students, attends college fairs, career days, college nights, community college events, provides individual matriculation and follow‑up, conducts speaking engagements, leads workshops, and coordinates presentations on the CSU system, EOP, financial aid, application process, testing, pre‑enrollment follow‑up, tele‑counseling, and the master plan of higher education in California.
Compiles recruitment data and prepares reports; assists with coordinating department‑wide events.
- SSP IA: Graduation from a four‑year college or university in behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field. No experience required; working with minoritized students, preference for Black students, and experience in higher education preferred.
- SSP IB: Graduation from a four‑year college or university in required field; one year of professional student services experience (entry trainee level) required;
Master’s degree may substitute for experience. Preference for minoritized students experience. - SSP II: Graduation from a four‑year college or university in a related field; two years of professional experience in student services or related field;
Master’s degree may substitute for one year of experience. Preference for minoritized students experience.
- SSP IA: General knowledge of individual and group behavior, research and observation techniques, interviewing methods; ability to gather/analyze data, reason logically, present clearly, write reports, and establish cooperative relationships.
- SSP IB: Knowledge of organizational and program management, research and interviewing techniques, individual/group behavior; ability to acquire knowledge of campus programs, interpret rules, gather data, reason logically, present clearly, and maintain relationships with stakeholders.
- SSP II: Knowledge of program practices, organizational management, research and interview techniques, and individual/group behavior; ability to interpret rules, use initiative for planning, analyze data, present findings, advise students, recognize diversity, and collaborate with faculty and agencies.
