Position description

The Visual and Performing Arts Education Program (VAPAE) in the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture offers an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental series of courses designed to introduce undergraduates to the key issues and methodologies in the field of arts education for multiple publics and to a broad range of possible career paths including K-12 teaching, museum education, socially-engaged arts practice, creative arts therapies, teaching artistry and arts advocacy.

VAPAE is committed to creating a diverse pool of candidates for potential part-time teaching positions in arts education during each academic year. In particular, VAPAE is now interested in meeting qualified candidates to teach its Arts Ed 20:
Introduction to Community Engagement through the Arts course in the Spring 2026 quarter.

This course provides an introduction to the fields of community engagement and community arts informed by the core philosophies of the progressive education and social justice movements. The focus of the course is to explore the possibilities of individuals and communities to be uplifted and empowered by creative arts practices that are inclusive, culturally and socially relevant, geographically specific, and intentionally transformational.

Referring to the disciplines of visual arts, dance, design|media arts, music and theater, this course explores the ways the arts help create, engage, and foster community. The course focuses on these possibilities within five different settings:
1) family and home sites;
2) K-12 settings;
3) non-traditional educational settings;
4) community arts sites and nonprofit arts programs; and
5) within the larger umbrella of social practice and civic engagement.

Applicants should be interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in their approach to teaching the arts, familiar with culturally responsive pedagogies, and have experience working in the fields of arts education, activism and community engagement. Applicants must submit course proposals and accompanying syllabi that pertain to and/or support the themes and topics as described above.
