Environmental Engineer

Position Overview

Hukari Ascendent is seeking an experienced Environmental Engineer to support environmental compliance, site characterization, and regulatory documentation for Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear facilities and/or Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) licensed facilities. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated expertise in environmental impact assessments, NEPA compliance, and environmental engineering for complex nuclear operations.

Key Responsibilities

Environmental Compliance & Documentation

  • Prepare, review, and support Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) and Environmental Assessments (EA) in accordance with NEPA requirements
  • Develop and maintain environmental permits, compliance documentation, and regulatory submittals for DOE and/or NRC facilities
  • Conduct environmental regulatory analysis and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations
  • Support NEPA documentation including Categorical Exclusions (CX), Environmental Assessments, and Environmental Impact Statements

Site Characterization & Assessment

  • Perform site characterization studies including soil, groundwater, and air quality assessments
  • Conduct environmental baseline studies and ongoing environmental monitoring programs
  • Evaluate environmental impacts of proposed nuclear facility operations, modifications, and decommissioning activities
  • Develop sampling and analysis plans for environmental media in support of site investigations

Nuclear Facility Support

  • Support environmental programs at DOE nuclear facilities and/or NRC licensed facilities
  • Interface with DOE, NRC, EPA, and state environmental regulatory agencies
  • Participate in environmental audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews
  • Develop and implement environmental management systems and pollution prevention programs

Technical Analysis & Reporting

  • Prepare technical reports, white papers, and presentations on environmental findings and compliance status
  • Conduct environmental risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies
  • Review and evaluate environmental monitoring data and prepare trend analyses
  • Support environmental restoration and remediation projects at nuclear sites
Required Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • Master's degree preferred
Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of professional environmental engineering experience
  • Demonstrated experience with NEPA compliance and documentation (EIS, EA, CX)
  • Experience conducting site characterization studies and environmental assessments
  • Experience with DOE nuclear facilities OR NRC licensed facilities required
Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of federal environmental regulations including NEPA, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, RCRA, and CERCLA
  • Familiarity with DOE Orders (particularly DOE O 451.1B) and/or NRC regulations (10 CFR)
  • Proficiency in environmental sampling protocols, data analysis, and interpretation
  • Experience with environmental modeling software and GIS applications
  • Excellent technical writing skills for preparing regulatory documents and reports
Clearance & Other Requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-clearance or equivalent security clearance
  • US Citizenship required for clearance eligibility
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to nuclear facility sites as needed
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Environmental Engineering or related discipline
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) or equivalent certification
  • Active DOE Q-clearance or L-clearance
  • Experience with both DOE nuclear facilities AND NRC licensed facilities
  • Experience with nuclear facility decommissioning and environmental restoration projects
  • Knowledge of radiological environmental monitoring and dose assessment
  • Experience with DOE National Environmental Policy Act Compliance Program
  • Familiarity with environmental management at nuclear weapons complex facilities
  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Environmental Engineering or related field
