Tax Manager, Business Incentives Group (FDII)
Join BDO USA as a Tax Manager in our Business Incentives Group (FDII). As a member of BDO’s Specialized Tax Services (STS), you will help clients identify, document, and support tax positions related to Business Incentives Group (BIG) tax law during examination and appeals.
Job SummaryAs the STS BIG Manager, you will develop and drive business development, process improvement, and team‑building initiatives while ensuring the highest quality tax advice and support for clients.
Key Responsibilities- Research
- Identify all situations where research is necessary and conduct appropriate investigation.
- Confirm accuracy of facts and sources.
- Prepare studies of tax implications and outline alternative actions.
- Compose effective research memos.
- Develop presentations for marketing and sales opportunities.
- Tax Compliance
- Ensure clients comply with applicable authorities.
- Identify options for minimizing client tax and reporting burdens.
- Identify “gray areas” and communicate related risks to partners.
- Complete accurate work papers and tax return forms.
- Meet firm risk management and tax quality control standards.
- Communicate with clients and Core Tax Services, Assurance, and Consulting personnel.
- Tax Consulting
- Develop, recommend, and implement solutions maximizing tax benefits.
- Stay informed of new developments affecting BIG tax positions.
- Identify and assist in maximizing all potential BIG tax benefits.
- Identify process improvements in documenting and supporting BIG benefits during exam and appeals.
- Tax Controversy
- Represent clients before tax authorities.
- Respond to inquiries from federal and state authorities regarding BIG tax issues.
- Tax Specialization
- Develop in-depth understanding of BIG tax technical and practical issues.
- Identify client opportunities and issues in other tax specializations.

- Apply industry and firm standards such as FAS 109 and FIN

- Strategy Development
- Develop new or improved strategies for clients, the firm, or personnel.
- Suggest marketing approaches for new client acquisition.
- Other duties as required.
- Supervise and review day‑to‑day work of STS BIG Senior Associates, Associates, and Interns.
- Ensure all team members are trained in required areas.
- Evaluate performance, set goals, and provide constructive feedback.
- Act as Career Advisor to senior associates and associates.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Preferred:
Degree in accounting, tax, or finance;
Master’s degree;
Juris Doctor.
- Five (5) or more years of prior tax consulting experience.
- Prior supervisory experience with tax consulting professionals.
- Preferred:
Experience in accounting, tax, or finance; BIG tax consulting; preparing/reviewing tax provisions; corporate taxation, consolidations, and partnerships.
- Preferred: CPA certification;
Enrolled Agent.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word).
- Experience with tax software and research databases (Caseware, GoSystems).
- Strong knowledge of BIG tax area commensurate with experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication.
- Superior analytical and research skills.
- Solid organizational and time‑management skills.
- Multi‑tasking ability in deadline‑driven environments.
- Team‑management and delegation skills.
- Relationship building with firm and client personnel.
- Positive team environment contribution and professional development.
- Executive presence; ability to act as primary contact on engagements.
National Range: $79,800 – $168,000
Maryland Range: $79,800 – $168,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $79,800 – $168,000
Washington DC Range: $79,800 – $168,000
