Are you an experienced Controller with an active CPA and career in non profit? If so, then we are working on a Controller opportunity that is right up your alley!
A nonprofit in the Valley is looking for a Controller to lead accounting and GL operations for their organization. The Controller will be responsible for managing a team, non profit fund accounting, and using systems to drive process improvement. To be successful in this role, the Controller will need to demonstrate leadership skills, be a great communicator, and systems savvy.
What do you need for this Controller role?- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field
- 20+ years of accounting experience
- 10+ years of people management experience
- MUST be an active CPA
- MUST have non profit related experience
- Advanced Excel
- Direct the maintenance of the general ledger to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with US GAAP.
- Supervise daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and cash management.
- Oversee journal entries, reconciliations, and closing processes to deliver precise financial data.
- Establish and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Lead the preparation and distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Analyze variances against budget, forecast, prior periods, and trends to provide actionable insights.
- Present financial performance metrics and key findings to senior leadership and the Board as needed.
- Ensure reporting deadlines are consistently met while maintaining high standards of accuracy.
- Oversee all aspects of grant and award compliance, including allocation, expense tracking, and reporting.
- Coordinate annual financial audits and serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, donor restrictions, and contract obligations.
- Maintain robust systems to monitor restricted funds and oversee timely release of net assets.
- Continuously evaluate and strengthen financial systems, processes, and internal controls.
- Recommend and implement best practices to increase efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.
- Drive automation and modernization of accounting workflows where applicable.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to align financial goals with organizational priorities.
- Partner with program and administrative teams to provide financial guidance and support strategic decision-making.
- Contribute to the development of budgets, forecasts, and long-range financial planning.
- Provide financial insights to support operational excellence and resource optimization.
- Manage and mentor the Accounting, Grants Management, and Reporting/Consolidation teams.
- Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Set clear performance expectations and foster professional development across the department.
- Serve as a role model for ethical financial stewardship and organizational values.
