Overview

ANNUAL SALARY: $80,680 - $124,236

NOTE:

DUTIES

A Port Police Officer is a sworn peace officer, authorized to carry a firearm who enforces federal and state regulations, City of Los Angeles ordinances, and security, traffic, and safety rules and regulations; engages in law enforcement activities, including uniformed foot, vehicle, boat, motorcycle, bicycle patrol and plainclothes assignments, arrest, and report writing at the Port of Los Angeles; provides information to the public regarding locations and operations of the Department;

engages in hazardous materials enforcement; and does related work.

  • At least 20 years of age at the time of application and 21 years of age by police academy graduation.
  • Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S. institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) certificate is required. A two or four year college degree from an accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high school requirements. Documentation demonstrating that the institution is accredited must be submitted prior to taking the written test.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • PROCESS NOTES

    A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.

    Examination Weight:
    Multiple-Choice Test;
    Personal History Statement;
    Interview. The examination will include the qualifying multiple-choice test, a qualifying Personal History Statement, and an online interview. Details and online testing FAQs are provided by the City.

    All candidates who receive a passing score on the Multiple-Choice Test will be invited to submit a Personal History Statement, followed by an Interview if applicable. The interview may be conducted online with remote participation.

    ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION:
    The investigation includes fingerprinting and a background interview, checks of records, and interviews with references. Findings are valid for 12 months. A polygraph examination will be conducted prior to the field investigation. All candidates are processed under current guidelines.

    Any conviction by a state, the federal government, or a foreign government of a crime punishable by imprisonment will result in disqualification.

    Note:

    Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor involving domestic violence from carrying a firearm.

    PHYSICAL FITNESS QUALIFIER: You are required to complete the Physical Fitness Qualifier (PFQ) prior to appointment. Score is advisory. You may retake the PFQ; the score is valid for 12 months. If you score below 50, you are encouraged to participate in CAP and retake the PFQ. Details at the CAP site in the posting.

    MEDICAL EVALUATION:
    Includes a medical exam by a City physician, possible cardiac stress test, and psychological evaluation. Medical results are valid for up to 12 months. Psychological tests and interviews assess suitability for the role.

    HEALTH/PHYSICAL CONDITION:
    You must be in excellent health and physical condition to perform duties.

    VISION:
    Specifications relate to uncorrected and corrected vision and color naming ability as described in the original posting.

    PRE-EMPLOYMENT SUBSTANCE SCREENING:
    As this class is safety sensitive, drug and alcohol screening may be required prior to appointment and during employment.

    CERTIFICATION AND APPOINTMENT:
    You must successfully complete all required steps before hiring as a Port Police Officer.

    ACADEMY TRAINING: A six-month, 40-hour per week training and orientation program with full pay is required.
