About this PositionThe position makes initial and continual eligibility determinations of public assistance and grants for an assigned number of applicants and participants.
Responsibilities include:
- Interviewing applicants or participants receiving public assistance to obtain financial and eligibility data.
- Assisting applicants or participants in completing the necessary documents for the initiation, continuation, or modification of benefits.
- Explaining provisions of public assistance programs, applicable federal and state regulations, county policies, and legal rights and responsibilities.
- Advising participants of sanctions for non‑compliance with benefit terms.
- Reviewing and analyzing financial and eligibility information to determine eligibility for programs such as CalWORKs, General Relief, Cal Fresh, Medi‑Cal, Foster Care, and others.
- Contacting individuals, agencies, insurance companies, schools, and other institutions to verify or clarify information and resolve discrepancies.
- Analyzing available information and making appropriate disposition recommendations.
- Computing benefits for eligible applicants or participants, authorizing special‑needs funds, and updating financial information and budget documents.
- Organizing, monitoring, and prioritizing assigned cases to ensure records and documents are filed, verified, and updated within statutory deadlines.
- Making home calls or field visits to interview participants, verify eligibility, and clarify case‑file information.
- Assessing applicants’ or participants’ social situations to identify potential problems and referring them to appropriate County or community services.
- Preparing forms for entering participant data into the computer system and reviewing computer‑generated reports for accuracy.
- Searching income and eligibility databases to confirm that applicants or participants are not receiving income from other public assistance programs.
- Participating in a job referral and placement project for potentially employable applicants and participants, as needed.
- Verifying earnings or incomes to compute over‑payments, generate over‑payment reports and Notices of Action, and referring suspected cases to the Welfare Fraud Prevention and Investigations unit.
Option 1: One year of experience as an Eligibility Worker I in the service of Los Angeles County.
Option 2: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
Credit for experience is given based on a 40‑hour workweek. Part‑time experience is credited proportionally (e.g., 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience).
Special RequirementsTo qualify under Option I, applicants must hold or have held the Eligibility Worker I position in salary service of Los Angeles County.
