The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for providing respiratory care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, advanced airway management, and related diagnostics. They serve as a resource for nursing staff, following department and hospital policies, and report to the Department Manager. The role requires commitment to the mission and core values of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital and supports strategic and quality improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Know admitting diagnosis and pulmonary pathophysiology for assigned patients, perform assessments, and provide appropriate therapy.
- Evaluate and document data from respiratory monitoring devices.
- Assess patient response to respiratory care; document required information per policies.
- Recommend respiratory care services considering age, cognitive, and development status.
- Initiate routine orders within specified time limits.
- Measure and adjust airway cuff pressures.
- Recommend changes in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to physicians, nursing, and co-workers.
- Modify treatments or techniques, when possible, to optimize care and report changes.
- Use appropriate chain-of-command when consulting on patients not responding to standard procedures.
- Perform respiratory diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Provide ventilatory support during intra-hospital transfers.
- Disinfect respiratory equipment and follow infection control policies.
- Perform and evaluate blood gas analysis, including quality control per lab policies.
- Collect arterial, capillary, and cord blood samples; label, handle, and dispose per policy.
- Document and report critical blood gas values to nurse/physician.
- Maintain cleanliness of the blood gas laboratory and perform analyzer maintenance.
- Perform cardiopulmonary and neonatal resuscitation (CPR/) and respond to emergencies.
- Auscultate lungs to confirm endotracheal tube placement.
- Identify contraindications in chest physiotherapy and advise physicians.
- Perform oral, nasal, and tracheal suctioning to maintain airway patency.
- Collaborate with physicians and nurses on suctioning frequency.
- Provide solutions when problems arise.
- Lead patient/family education on chronic pulmonary disorder management, medication use, oxygen therapy, and equipment.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment in accordance with regulatory standards.
- Participate in the department’s quality and performance improvement plan, and report findings to the Respiratory Manager.
- Education – Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) approved school and passage of the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification examination.
- Qualifications / Experience – Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in an acute care setting; additional experience may be considered for candidates with strong education and background.
- Licensing / Credentials – Current California Respiratory Care Practitioner license;
National Board Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT); consideration for credential‑eligible or CRTT‑credentialed Respiratory Therapists with over 25 years of experience. - Special Skills / Knowledge – Bilingual in Spanish preferred; basic computer skills; current BLS, ACLS, PALS;
Managing Assaultive Behavior (MAB) upon hire or within 90 days;
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) upon hire or within 90 days;
Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.
