DefinitionProvides first‑level supervision to recreation therapists, therapy assistants, aides, and other support staff in various clinical settings. Responsibilities include establishing schedules, reviewing quality of service, implementing corrective measures, evaluating performance, making recommendations on hiring and discipline, resolving employee grievances, serving as a resource for unusual problems, developing policies, supervising clinical training, preparing reports, planning staff and supply requirements, coordinating unit therapy programs, revising treatment programs, conducting staff meetings, and carrying a caseload that includes complex or emergency assignments.
Responsibilities• Establish and adjust work schedules based on therapy needs.
• Review quality and adequacy of therapy services and implement corrective measures.
• Evaluate employee performance and prepare performance evaluations.
• Make recommendations on hiring, promotions, transfers, work improvement, discipline, and discharge.
• Resolve employee grievances and discipline issues.
• Serve as a resource person for therapy staff regarding unusual or difficult problems.
• Develop, revise, and implement organizational policies and procedures.
• Supervise clinical training of students and arrange in‑service training and conferences.
• Prepare reports summarizing work activities, goals, planning, execution, results, analysis, conclusions, and recommendations.
• Plan and recommend staff, equipment, and supply requirements.
• Coordinate unit therapy programs with physicians, allied health personnel, teachers, families, and other agencies.
• Plan short‑ and long‑range staff requirements based on anticipated caseload.
• Revise therapy treatment programs based on changes in therapy needs, patient records, and professional literature.
• Conduct staff meetings to share technical and administrative information.
• Carry a caseload that includes more complicated or emergency casework assignments and conduct individual or group therapy as required.
Minimum Requirements- Graduation from an accredited college or university with specialization in Recreation Therapy.
- Three (3) years of experience in Recreation Therapy, with at least two (2) years at the level of Recreation Therapist I.
- Alternately, a master’s degree in Recreation Therapy or related field may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Current certification as a Recreation Therapist issued by the California Board of Parks and Recreation Certification, or certification as a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist issued by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification. All licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted.
Driver LicenceA valid California Class C driver licence or alternative transportation method is required for job‑related functions; a Class B licence may be required for some positions.
