Position: Healthcare Interpreter (Exam No. Y1153L)
Location/Opening Date: Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, first day of filing August 18, 2020.
Job SummaryProvides a full range of interpretation/translation services to patients, physicians, nurses and other health professionals in one or more foreign languages. Interpreter services rendered in person, by telephone, video medical interpreting technology, or other remote technology to non‑English speaking patients and families, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
Essential Job Functions- Render accurate and complete interpretation/translation messages from source language to target language in all healthcare settings.
- Inform healthcare provider if content may be culturally offensive, insensitive, or harmful.
- Assess patient understanding of conveyed information.
- Translate patient‑related materials (discharge procedures, medication instructions, consent forms, etc.).
- Perform routine visual inspection of interpreter equipment and report malfunctions.
- Collect and maintain interpretation records and files, including daily computer entries.
- Attend mandatory trainings on healthcare interpreting, communication skills, culturally competent healthcare, patient safety, video medical interpreting and telephonic technology.
- Assist staff on use of interpreter equipment and other language access services.
- Option I:
Successful completion of a Healthcare Interpreter Training Program (includes Medical Terminology) and proof of language proficiency identifying the certified language. - Option II:
Certification or credential issued by a recognized Healthcare Interpreter credentialing organization and proof of language proficiency identifying the certified language.
- Experience interpreting and translating one or more foreign languages within a healthcare setting as a certified medical interpreter.
Physical Requirements
- Valid California Class C Driver License or alternate transportation method as needed.
- Light physical effort: occasional light lifting up to 10‑lb limit, some bending, stooping or squatting, considerable walking may be involved.
