Responsibilities
  • Perform technical fingerprint, photographic, video and computer graphic tasks related to criminal investigation.
  • Identify, document, collect, and preserve physical and biological evidence.
  • Perform laboratory analysis for developing latent fingerprints using conventional techniques.
  • Perform fingerprint comparisons in connection with investigations and prosecutions of criminal cases.
  • Conduct complex crime scene investigations and utilize specialized techniques to recognize, search, document, collect, and preserve physical and biological evidence (e.g., fingerprints, DNA, firearms evidence, plant material, blood spatters, tool marks, tire track impressions).
  • Make casts of footprints and other impression evidence.
  • Document crime scenes using conventional and digital photography, including forensic videotaping.
  • Perform crime scene sketching and diagramming with computer-aided software.
  • Field and laboratory analysis of physical evidence and chemical processing for latent fingerprints, including laser applications and alternate light sources (ALS).
  • Perform presumptive chemical analysis on substances including blood, semen, and saliva.
  • Produce and store digital photography and video, and prepare crime scene charts and enlargements.
  • Testify in court as an expert witness on latent fingerprint analysis and related forensic findings.
  • Process and compare fingerprints found at crime scenes and coordinate with other agencies using AFIS, CAL-, and IAFIS systems.
  • Prepare court exhibits and detailed reports of crime scene investigations and forensic analyses.
  • Conduct training programs and perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Knowledge of: Fingerprint classification systems; lifting and preserving latent fingerprints; collecting and preserving crime scene evidence; procedures, laws, and integrity of evidence; photographic darkroom techniques; crime scene procedures; computer graphics/digital imaging for forensic applications; photography and video techniques; AFIS, CAL-, and IAFIS systems.
  • Ability to: Perform complex latent fingerprint recovery and classification; adjust color digital images for storage and output; take photographs with film and digital cameras; testify effectively in court; obtain and maintain expert fingerprint certification; respond to crime scenes and preserve evidence; prepare physical evidence for court; operate a City vehicle; learn and use law enforcement databases with appropriate confidentiality; provide effective customer service;

    establish cooperative working relationships with City employees and the public.
  • Skill in: Using personal computers and software; taking forensic photographs; lifting and classifying fingerprints; reading, writing and communicating effectively.
Education, Training, and Experience

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Four years of recent, paid work experience performing fingerprint identification and related photographic work and processing crime scenes for physical evidence. An Associate’s degree in criminal justice or forensic science, or 30 semester units of college coursework in fingerprint classification/identification or related field, will substitute for two years of the required experience. A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Forensic Science, or a closely related field will substitute for the four years of required experience.
