Job SummaryThe J. Paul Getty Museum welcomes 1.8 million visitors annually across its Brentwood and Pacific Palisades locations. To ensure exceptional visitor experiences, Getty relies on a corps of 400+ volunteers who work alongside staff in visitor services, docent programs, and other areas. The Manager of the Volunteer Program oversees the recruitment, training, engagement, and retention of this vital volunteer community.
Position Summary
As a key member of the Visitor & Security Services team, reporting to the Assistant Vice President Visitor & Security Services, the Manager of the Volunteer Program will design, implement, and manage all aspects of Getty's Volunteer Program. This role requires a strategic leader with experience in cultural institutions, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to fostering inclusive, welcoming, and meaningful visitor experiences.
This role directly contributes to visitor satisfaction and Getty's reputation as a world-class museum.
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Visitor & Security Services leadership; participate in weekly management meetings and cross-departmental projects.
- Serve periodically as Manager on Duty, overseeing operations at the Getty Center or Villa.
- Develop and implement volunteer engagement strategies, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, retention, and recognition.
- Maintain accurate volunteer records, track hours, and prepare reports to evaluate program effectiveness.
- Partner with department heads to assess volunteer needs and ensure adequate coverage for programs, events, and daily operations.
- Support and promote Getty's commitment to equity and inclusion in volunteer engagement.
- Organize ongoing training, enrichment, and recognition opportunities for volunteers.
- Act as a frontline ambassador for Getty's mission, vision, and values, ensuring volunteers are informed and engaged.
- Monitor internal and external communications (newsletters, website, social media, signage) to support continuity of visitor experience.
- Manage program budgets in collaboration with the Sr. Budget Analyst.
- Build relationships with peer institutions to benchmark and share best practices.
Lead the development and daily management of the Volunteer Program, ensuring alignment with Getty's mission and visitor experience priorities.
- Bachelor's degree required.
- 3-6 years of supervisory or program management experience, preferably in cultural or nonprofit settings.
- Proven success in leading inclusive recruitment, onboarding, and volunteer engagement efforts.
- Experience managing large volunteer work forces (200+ individuals).
- Prior museum or cultural institution experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and collaboration tools (Zoom, Teams); willingness to learn Getty's volunteer database system.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to motivate, lead, and collaborate across diverse groups.
- Skilled in training facilitation, public speaking, and delivering presentations.
- Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities; able to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
