Position Summary

Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, performs individually assigned care activities for the chronically ill and technologically dependent residents based on established resident care policies and procedures. Participates in resident care as an active member of the healthcare delivery team. Specific areas of responsibility include monitoring of resident vital signs, providing resident hygiene and comfort measures, assisting with medical procedures, and fulfilling nutritional and grooming needs.

Provides general direct nursing care to assigned residents.

Qualifications / Requirements
  • Current California Certified Nursing Assistant Certification
  • Current BCLS certification
  • No prior CNA experience required. New grads welcome.
  • Knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering simple treatments and providing bedside patient care services, as permitted by state regulation.
  • Knowledge of basic medical asepsis and standard precautions.
  • Willing to work rotating shifts and different units.
  • Ability to contribute to a patient-centered environment.
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manual.
  • Must be easily understood through verbal communication in English language.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure; use whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Must provide verification of TST (tuberculin skin test) as required by state law and in accordance with Company policy.
  • Basic knowledge of computer use or willingness to learn.
  • Must attend a minimum of 12 hours continuing education programs provided by the center in order to maintain certification.
Responsibilities
  • Provides patient care in a manner conducive to safety and comfort.
  • Assists patient with Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
  • Obtains and records vital signs and weights per policy.
  • Assists patients with ambulation and transfers; positions patients correctly; applies adaptive equipment.
  • Cares for personal belongings; assists physician and/or licensed nurse with treatments and procedures.
  • Makes both occupied and unoccupied beds; accompanies patients when transported outside the center for appointments.
  • Ensures patients are ready for scheduled rehab therapy and transports patients to rehab area.
  • Notifies licensed nurse if patient identification is missing.
  • Participates in care planning and implements care according to care plan.
  • Performs skin care treatments and applies simple dressings under direction of licensed nurse.
  • Feeds or assists patients with meals and provides nourishment per care plan.
  • Records patient’s oral intake and output; uses EMR; answers call lights and cleans areas of spillage.
  • Uses standard precautions; adheres to Contact and Droplet Precautions.
  • Participates in orientation of new nursing assistants; reports changes in patient condition or concerns to charge nurse or supervisor.
  • Collects and bags soiled linen; obtains clean linens; cleans utility rooms, kitchen areas, and other nursing areas.
  • Cleans patient equipment; transfers patient belongings and assists with postmortem care.
  • Assists with patient discharge; assists with orientation of newly hired CNAs.
  • Promotes a culture of safety; collaborates and coordinates with other departments for effective care.
  • Contributes to a respectful, team-oriented environment responsive to staff, patients and families.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities; maintains confidentiality and protects PHI.
  • Stays and works beyond scheduled shift if needed to meet state staffing requirements and patient needs.
  • Performs other duties as requested.
Additional Information
  • Successful completion of a state approved certified nursing assistant program.
  • A minimum of a high school education or high school equivalency diploma is preferred.
  • This position requires that the employee is able to read, write, speak and understand the spoken English language at the work site.
